Since the last few days, I have 2 strange files on my Mac Air desktop that are xlsx files. They cannot be opened or deleted. When I try to trash them, it comes up with an error message that the item “whatever” cannot be moved to trash as it cannot be deleted.
This is seriously annoying me because I hate clutter and because I have no idea where these files came from and what they are.
If excel is running, quit it before deleting these files, they may be temporary files created by excel. Does the names start with "~" or some other special character?
Seems like they are Excel Temporary files. Alot of people seem to have this problem with Excel. What you can try is to run permission repair from Disk Utility. >>> Reboot!
Let us know if the problem still exists after doing this, thanks.
Rayan, I tried deleting the files with both Excel running and not.
One file is DC4C9800 and the other is 68887900. No other characters.
They are the temporary files created by excel while you are working on a new file (until you save it with a name), and they should be automatically deleted when you exit excel.
Try deleting .DS Store file on the desktop, reboot. If that doesn't fix the problem, try fixing the permission for that drive using the "Disk Utility"

OK. Doing that right now. Will report in a few minutes.
The procedure as mentioned by Zapatista above did work but it happened again. So I'm thinking that I have to change some settings somewhere. I'll just wait for Babaji to bless us with his knowledge. Meanwhile, I'll just sit patiently :(
Zap, yes I've been working on Excel.
Yes, I work on Excel quite a bit these days.
And yes these 2 unknown files pop up each time I'm working on Excel, but only in the last week.
No I haven't updated my OS recently.
Hmm I see, it's a well known problem actually. Those files are just temp files which actually should not be on the desktop, but for some strange reason they end up there. You can't delete them because the process is still running in the background. I had to deal with this problem in the past also, and from one day to another it went away by itself. LOL Good Luck, until then just make use of the Force Quit option.
