My friend just had a daughter few weeks back and I bought a nice little shirt (with matching pant) which said something like "Don't even think about it. I'm Grandma's favorite"
I found it cute so I bought it for her before I went to my friend's house. Something like that perhaps?

The BEST thing I ever got for my littles was a "bouncy seat", a little strap-in lounger that you put baby in. When baby moves, the seat gently bounces. Most of them have battery-operated vibration and a toy bar too. These are JUST the best esp if/when baby is gassy or fussy. And they're really not expensive.
Best thing for mom would be a lovely camisole or a really nice nursing top. Something fussy and pretty, theres nothing better for a new mom than to receive something special just for her.

Just be careful if you are buying a bouncy seat as people receive them a lot as gifts. One friend of ours received 3!!

well u can buy some toys for the new born like the Play Gym....which keeps the baby busy while the new mom can do certain household works...also any crib toys....
for the mum...any Gazzaz perfume set...any suit....etc

a gift certificate from toys’r’us or any other store with baby stuff. that way, the mom gets to shop for her baby and she probably has a better idea of what she wants/needs than you do. if you feel weird about giving just an envelope, wrap it up with a cute little stuffed toy.
also, diaper cakes are very popular - and yes, they’re made out of clean diapers. and no, its not an edible cake

for the mom, how about maid service for a month, once a week or more if you can afford it? i’m sure she’ll need it with a newborn! you could also arrange a spa session for her- mani, pedi, massage- http://www.wayspa.com is a great site for discounted packages.

embroided socks... the ones they have for newboarns r sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute! i am in love with them! get the ones that have intricate work with soft beads/ croatia/ net ka kaam done on them!
and 4 something to go with that... perhaps a matching jump-suit and blanket...

NEVER BUY clothes as they arent really memorable gifts kids grow up very fast go fer a toy or sum baby bedding or sumfin useful :S

when my little one was born i got some really memorable gifts which i still treasure, one was a beautiful large photoframe, which had 3 spaces going down where u can put your littleuns pictures in: so from newborn to six months old and then 12 months. These sort of personal gifts mean alot to the mother coz its somethin u can keep and look back at like a baby's progress book.
