Help - Outlook express

My OE is very full.
It is now downloading the emails but I cannot see them - does not show them in the Inbox as up to 3 days ago. What’s up? Where does it store them? Also it has eliminated all emails recieved between mid July and 3 days ago.

If I compress will any emails be lost?

Help please in recovery and for future should i switch to Mozilla or Netscape?

I’m on Win XP.

Shukriya for all guidance for Dummies.

Re: Help - Outlook express

Let me assume that no virus has affected your OE. So now, are you using POP or IMAP for fetching emails? If you were using IMAP, all of your mails should be on the server.

OE is a lightweight email client and it is very fragile to Trojan attacks. Other thing I could think of is that OE can not handle more than few thousand emails, hence stops showing some of them (may be some expert can correct me here).

About archiving, have you compressed the emails before? There should be a folder in your profile where OE stores all the emails in a compressed way. You might want to backup that folder and then save it somewhere else. Here is a guide about backing up and restoring the emails in OE.

For future alternative email client, I can recommend Mozilla ThunderBird.

Open the freezer door...put your head in...and then ask someone to whack it for you....!!

Why would you save locally when you can save emails online?

Doh!!

Re: Help - Outlook express

Don't know much about OE but it sounds like a quota problem.
I agree with DW Thunderbird is a decent email client.

Re: Help - Outlook express

I would say go for Eudora. A little archaic user interface, but loads of features.

Re: Help - Outlook express

There are loads of better & more reliable Email clients, why dont u use normal Outlook? If you have MS Office installed then I'd recommend using normal Outlook. Otherwise my vote goes for Thunderbird. Even Pegasus is not bad.

Re: Help - Outlook express

^Outlook 2007 (or even Outlook 2003) is a very bloated program, and unless someone plans to use its Contacts and Calendar feature, I would not recommend using it for just email purposes.

Re: Help - Outlook express

I don't understand what the problem is.
a. OE doesn't get "full"
b. if the emails are getting downloaded there is no way it would not show them
c. it stores email in the c:\documents and settings\profilename\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Re: Help - Outlook express

The maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express is 2 GB.
In Outlook 02 and earlier, the .pst file has a limit of 2 GB which becomes 20 GB in 03 and 07.

Re: Help - Outlook express

dumpt it. why would anyone in their right mindset be using oe

Re: Help - Outlook express

Cuz its just there :)

Re: Help - Outlook express

So is Nancy Pelosi. We don't go around use her as our email client.

Re: Help - Outlook express

Well if you want to transfer your data (contact, calendar etc.) from your PDA to the Windows machine, guess with which Email client will it work? :)

BTW. Well my effort to install Familiar linux on HP was successful, but the graphic interface really sux, so as long as we have Windows for Pocket PC, Outlook is there to stay :(

Re: Help - Outlook express

She is getting used :snooty:

Re: Help - Outlook express

He is using it for email and thats what my comment was about. Its another thing to use it for contacts and callender for transfer to your mobile phones. And I use Microsoft Outlook (not OE) for that purpose. Outlook Express???? Come on man....

Re: Help - Outlook express

Just to make sure i got the problem right, so ur OE is receiving emails, but u only c the ones after Oct 4th? If that's the case, i've seen a similar problem before...in that case, OE had created a 2nd dbx file for the inbox...

  1. find the location where OE is storing all of your emails

easy way to do it, launch OE, click on Tools --> Options, select "Maintenance" and click on the "Store Folder" button...it should give u an exact path where the emails are being stored - typically it's C:\Documents and Settings\loginID\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities{some-hex-characters}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

  1. browse to that folder, and see if you have an "inbox" and "inbox(1)" file, along with a file for every other folder u c in your OE (such as sent items, drafts, deleted items etc) - if your do see multiple instances of "inbox" as mentioned above, that's the problem!!

  2. create a new "temp" folder in OE, and move all your current emails from the inbox to the temp folder

  3. close out OE

  4. back in the store folder, delete the latest version of the inbox DBX file typically it's "inbox(1)") - to ensure u r getting rid of the latest version, enable the details view (view --> details) and compare the details for the inbox DBX files to see which one was modified more recently

  5. also delete the "folders" dbx file

  6. cross ur fingers and restart OE - and hope all the missing emails are showing again in the inbox :D

if that works, make sure u move the emails to a PST file etc, cuz chances are, the DBX file was at it's limit and hence OE created a new "inbox" for u...once u've moved the emails to an archive, then u can move the emails from the "temp" folder created in step 3. back to the inbox

hope this helps :) let me know if it works out...

Re: Help - Outlook express

Use **Archive **email option from tools, and keep old emails in archive folder, no you can always access if needed from archive folder...

The capacity of OE is 1GB, now increased in latest version to more, but archiving is the best solution, it also make the access faster! ...
