Its really very simple, you have already taken the first step of making a concience decision to invest. First of all you must understand nature of assets available for investors and then look at your investment profile. Determine your characterestics ie can u afford to invest a portion of your savings into risky assets? How much risk r u willing to take? What is your investment horizon? What r your shortterm, MT and LT needs? What is the liability schedule if any? Once u have drawn all these and more characterestics for yourself, then u will have to decide where and what to invest.
Since your question pertains to stocks, you can do so thru direct investments or thru purchase of available funds. Both offer exposure to the market and have their own advantages and disadvantages. Since u r a first time buyer, it will be in your best interest to look at various funds (value, growth, income and balanced) as a starting point.
Individuals can open accounts online with any brokerage house in the US and buy funds or stocks with their funds.
Finally, if u r a first time investor, have u bought a house or not? It is best if u start your investments by buying or investing thru the mortgage market and then diversify your asset holdings.

but in this investment ,.,. you have to be very careful ... if u r in touch with karachi stock exchange ... then u must know .. what happened at MARCH ...
KSE .. which is normally revolves around 7000 - 8000 goes upto 10000+ and created records ... and then sudden downfall which have destroyed the whole backbone of small investors ...
so be very careful. .. it is in the same time very beneficial ... you can make a lot ..
