Help - Naasik and Naastik

I was reading a novel in Urdu, where a Saadhu comes in a village and tells something related to future. Some people got irritated and start showing their anger and making fun of Saadhu. Seeing this Saadhu says ’ Main Naasik hoon, Naastik nahin’.

What does this mean? :hmmm:

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

Why Not SMS The Saadhu For The Answer?

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

nastik means a person who doesnt believe in god.
nasik is name of a town in maharastra. i dont know how they co relate. may be there is an alternate meaning which i dont know

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

Saadhoo was from British era. no mobile, no sms :(

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

Thanks kaka. Yes now I remember Ismat Chughtai’s short story ‘kafir’, where nastik was used for atheist (mulhid in Urdu).

Naasik kia hai? :konfused:

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

naasik also means something related to nose.

naasika = nose = naak are all the same things with same old sanskrit roots.

are you sure you spelled it right?

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

btw i will elobrate naastik further so it will help you in future.

basically:

Aastik means the person who believes in god.

na- astik means a person who believes in no god.

swa-astik (swa means self) means a person who believes in himself. it is the same word which was picked by nazis for their twisted purpose.

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

Great information kaka. Naas is also used in Sindhi for nasal (related to nose). The word may be Naasak / Naasuk instead of Naasik as it does not contain any pronunciation, wherefrom I read it. I'll try to post complete para from the novel to make it more clear.

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

Well the word may be "Naasak" or "Naashak".
naas or nash means destruction ( as in satyanash)

and naasak or nashak would mean a person who destroys things.

Re: Help - Naasik and Naastik

I've searched meaning of the word 'Naasik' and it means ' devotee, worshiper' in Arabic, as we say 'Manasik e Hajj' i.e. ibadaat (prayers, etc) related to Hajj.
