Depends, for me both dresses were given by my inlaws.

Depends on where you're from/family traditions. In my family (Karachi-based), both outfits come from the boy's side. My understanding is that in Punjab the wedding day outfit is from the girl's side and the valima day outfit is from the boy's side.

In Pathan tradition, the wedding day outfit is from the guys side and the valima outfit is from the girls side. But from what I hear most often, the wedding outfit is from the girls side and valima outfit is from the guys side.

Jahan tak mene dekha hai, Larki waley baraat ka lengha banwate hain aur Larkey waley Walima ka lengha dete hain. Lekin sirf ek meri dost thi jisko dono din ke Lenghey larkey walon sey aya the uske ilawa kahin nahin dekha aisa.

as we've said, it depends on your family and background. the "rewaj" is different depending on who you are.

Allah Ka lakh lakh shukar we have no such trend in our family, but ive heard the walima the boys side pays for it/buys it....id rather they just pay for it (being within budget) because i dont really want to wear somthing ugly they picked out :D
