So my wedding is in about 2 months…but 3 weeks after my wedding, I’m attending the wedding of a close friend. I’m thinking about ordering a outfit (as a self-treat) and wearing it to her reception. I’m in love with this purple outfit…but don’t like the lehenga with it. I need ideas on what type of shirt I should make.
Please keep in mind I’m only 5 feet tall…lol. I love the colors and design. Obviously this will not be a bridal for me so the kaam can be a little less on the dupatta than shown. Also, I’m not looking for a design that’s “in” right now…I need idea to make this a traditional, classic outfit that I can wear for several years (if not longer!)
Questions:
Should I keep the sleeves long? Will short sleeves look bad?
what type of pants? Churidaar? Straight leg?
Should I do this as a long, straight kameez? Or do a long gown type look like the black outfit at the end? Or turn this into a anakali somehow? OR should I keep the top style just the way it is in the pic?
Ideas will be greatly appreciated.
OUTFIT I LOVE:
Considering turning it into a gown style like this. Bad idea given my height? Would it be OTT for someone else’s reception? Will this go out of style in a year or so?
I would make the front of the kameez go down longer and wear it with a churidaar. I am also not a fan of the big karis/paisleys on it. I think short sleeves would be ok, tho the long sleeves look really nice.
I'm in the process of getting that bottom one made right now!!! I modified it slightly....more of a front open style, with a longer train in the back as shown but shorter up front with cigarette pants...I'm doing it in a dark, dark navy blue...
paheli, i'd make the shirt way longer, wear it with a churidar like sahar said, or cigarette pants like khattichic's getting made but long enough shirt that the bottoms only show 2-3". you'll be wearing heels so as long as the shirt is fitted well, i wouldn't worry about your height. the maxi on its own is a bit OTT, i think, for other weddings BUT you will be a "new dulhan" so you'll likely get away with it. i'm not a huge fan of the massive paisley's on the front... i think you might safely remove those as large patterns can be overwhelming on petite frames.
1) I agree that the paisley's aren't "all that" so I'll take those out.
2) For the maxi.....yes, I'll be a "new dulhan" at this wedding BUT I want to be able to wear this for future weddings too so I'd rather not make it OTT.
3) I'll go with what you gals suggested. Make the shirt longer....2-3 inches above my ankle right?
4) What're cigarette pants? Any pics of this?
Khattichic: That sounds awesome! You better post pics once you get it! :)
i would either do sleeveless or long sleeves. short sleeves can be iffy unless you go with cap sleeves.
cigarette pants are straight leg or very skinny pants. i think churidars are more popular right now. you could make the churidar in the pink color at the bottom too, if you want.
and yes, 2-3" above your ankle, i think. do you have anything that long? it might help to try it on, even if its a skirt that you can put on with leggings just to see how it looks as a concept.
I'm getting that black gown made aswell, but in white with silver kaam. Do you guys really think it'll go out of fashion by next year? :-(
For that purple bridal OP posted, I'd say get a straight cut kameez with churidhar pants, rather than the long-at-the-sides thing and high in the middle, I hate that style with a passion!
Keep them full and relatively simple. Either have an embroidered cuff or just keep the shoulder design.
Straight leg would look better I guess, as it’ll give you bit of volume and structure at the bottom to keep the whole look balanced. Churidaar with heavy kameez look very underwhelming and flat sometimes. They look the best with relatively light and flowy frocks.
Straight kameez would probably give you a little tall and slender look. Anarakali with heavy kaam can look very overpowering on petite girls and speaking of overpowering, it’d be good idea if you keep the border small and sweet.
You know what, from personal experience, I really don’t find bridal gowns particular outstanding and flattering in person, In fact it looks quite costume-y. But I have to say, they tend to look quite appealing on camera which is interesting.
Good luck and whatever modifications you decide to go with, make sure you keep the entire look fresh and youthful. Instead of going overboard with the kaam, allow the colour purple to a make a statement. Its a great colour.
lol if it was me i would have kept the shirt style as it is including the paisley detail! lol just goes to show how ppls taste is differs. i would go for a churidar with docker heels.. and id keep the sleeves as they are. but you got to go for what you think is best for you.
^^ Original design is by Aisha Khadeeja...I'm getting it made through my regular clothes contact in karachi, a home based designer who is a semi relative (a cousin of a cousin....lol!)
Thanks a lot for the responses! :) I will keep the sleeves long with minimal kaam.
SCG: I don't have anything that long yet (2-3' above ankle) but I went today to pick up my set for my reception and tried on a desi outfit with that style and was happy with that look. :)
Question regarding dupatta: Can I kee the dupatta plain banarsi material? Or do I really need the kaam on the borders?
^ Honestly, kaam on the borders isn't necessary and just adds to the cost. Have the borders edged with jamawar pattis and it you want to add "sparkle" - add a sequin border patti in the same silver shade as the kaam on the kameez.
