HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

Hi there,

I’ve been married for almost a year now and this is around the time that I would have wanted to start trying for a baby.

I had blood tests a week back and my TSH came as 7.13 which is elevated and it means I am hypothyroid. I have had all the symptoms for a long time, especially fatigue but I just thought it was my very long commute and stressful job.

I keep reading that optimal TSH range for a healthy pregnancy is less than 2.5. Almost everything I am reading on the net says that its very dangerous to be hypothyroid and pregnant because it increases chances of miscarriage and birth defects.

I had a miscarriage back in December and the doctor just said that it is very common and that she wouldnt even look into unless or until I had two or three miscarriages.

I’m really worried now and I don’t want to have another miscarriage before something is done about this.

Does anyone have experience with hypothyroidism and pregnancy? I’ve cried continously everyday for the last week since I found out…I am an only child and I want children…the thought of not having any scares the life out of me. Allah na karay.

Please help. :frowning:

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

Thyroid levels are difficult to interpret during pregnancy as your body is going through hormonal changes. If you are really concerne then you should talk to your doctor and he will probably have you do more blood test.

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy…

I know women who had hypothyrodism and still had babies. Just be regular with your medicines.

I had it too when I was younger, treated it with medicines and was let off of medicines later. It started to show up again recently(became visible) although I didn’t experience any severe symptoms. Got it checked and except for it being multi-nodular in scans, the blood reports were normal :alhamd:

So anyway, I asked the Endocrinologist if any of my thyroid issues were related with fertility and he said, no. I am a bit confused on this one as I always thought hypothyrodism is the root cause of infertility.. but he simply ruled it out. He said that my thyroid is functioning normally but even if wasn’t, it wasn’t the cause on my fertility issues.

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

^ yeah that is confusing because everything i've read says it does affect fertility. hrm...

i've been thinking i should get mine checked too. what are the overt symptoms of hypothyroidism?

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

^it does not automatically lead to infertility.

in some cases, swollen lymph nodes may be a symptom too.

is there a big difference between hashimoto's hypothyroiditis and regular hypothyroidism? apart from the fact that one is an autoimmune disease?

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

i used to have it when i was younger. took synthroid and alhumdulillah levels are back to normal. i asked by gynecologist if it could affect fertility, so she checked it again, and said your levels are normal and it wont affect fertility.

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

^I thought hypothyrodisme is a chronical condition? Maybe not when you have it as a kid?

Hypothyrodisme does effect your fertilization in the sense that you need to have a normal functioning thyroid to have a succesful pregnancy. A low thyroid through out the pregnancy can lead to either a miscarriage early on or a child with mental disability. Usually doctor recommend you take about 50 mg extra levotyroxin ASAP when you know you're pregnant.

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

The problem is most doctors fail to recognize that it affects fertility. According to my doctor and a few other doctors my TSH level of 7.13 is nothing to worry about. For them it is just "borderline" whereas if you read medical studies on the net from actual doctors with PHD's - they specifically state that normal range is 0.3-3.0 and anything over a 2.0 is NOT safe for pregnancy.

I just hope I can convince my doctor to put me on a high enough dose of meds to bring my TSH down. Anyone know of any good Endocronologists in Mississauga or Toronto area?

Re: HELP! Hypothyroidism and pregnancy...

Your doctors are right, TSH of 7.13 is borderline. Just check it again in couple of weeks.
