Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

Like a few of you already know, i am getting married at the end of this year. I really need help with buying make up and applying it. I haven’t been putting lots of make up but i do put a liner + lipstick at work.
On parties, i put on some base, eye shadow, lipstick. Now that the wedding is getting close, some parties, weddings, dinners are on their way. I want to know what cosmetics to get for myself and how to apply them. If any one needs to view my picture before telling me you can PM me for it.

If there is any professional make up artist here i would love to know. I need help with what products/companies/type of make up/colour/codes etc. for:
-Eye shadows
-concealers
-base
-eye liner
-mascara
-lipsticks/gloss
-blush on

I want to have a more natural look, nothing that looks ‘thoppa-huwa’ or artificial! Thanx a million in advance girls!

ooh daffy, where to start!

i think it would be really good if you can find someone to have a few lessons with. you can learn yourself but it takes patience and practice, so help from someone who knows what they are doing will really get you on your way.
you will need to practice ‘event’ makeup specifically too because everyday makeup or the kind that you would do for parties etc isn’t the same. your wedding makeup will need to come across in the photographs, so will need to be a lot heavier than what you might be used to - even if you’re going for a natural look.
you will probably need to use a lot more things on your face, such as a primer. possibly a different foundation from what you would normally wear. definitely false eyelashes (but not the heavy doll eye ones :p).

what brands are available to you?

to begin with, i would say to get started practising eye makeup. this probably requires the most skill. you need to know what eyeshadow placement suits you best, what colours suit you and what you can get away with (e.g. the smokey look isn’t for everyone). perfect eyeliner application is a must too.

These are some good places to learn about makeup application from.

you might need to trawl through previous entries to see the posts that help you. i learnt a lot about makeup from the first link (even, what-not-to-do when you see people get it horribly wrong!), the second has some amazing eye looks.

i’m actually doing my cousin’s makeup for her wedding in pakistan in a few months as she wasn’t able to find anyone who can do the kind of makeup she wants. we’ve had to buy a lot of extra stuff and trial runs are imminent!

Thanx Stopit, i was expecting you would be the first one to reply and help me :biggthumb

Well products available here are of MAC, Luscious Cosmetics, Rimmel, Loreal, Revlon, Etc. all are available.

I will definitely look into the links you posted.

MAC is excellent, especially for foundations and eyechadows. Actually all their makeup is great! The colours ar amazing and it really lasts. Ive tried ALOT of other makeup and i think MAC wins hands down. If you go to your nearest MAC counter someone there will also help you with the best shades to suit you AND how to apply it! (No i'm not a sales rep for them, lol)

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

haha
i’m not well and off work at the moment so i have nothing else to do!

MAC is a great brand and most of my makeup is MAC. some people have issues with their foundations (they claim that they cause spots) but no one i know personally has had any problems. For the price (in the UK at least) their eyeshadow’s are by far and away their best products. The colour payoff is great and they have soooo many shades and finishes.
The girl in the second link i gave you does her eye looks with mainly MAC eyeshadows and pigments. She has some really good tutorials on creating eye bases that make the shadows more vibrant and how to blend.

A lot to of makeup artists use MAC. For weddings I think the preferred choices for foundation are ‘Face and Body Foundation’ and ‘Studio Tech Foundation’. Personally i use Studio Fix Fluid. I would try them all out and if you can, take pictures of yourself (flash and non-flash) to see how they look. Dunno if you can do that in Pakistan or if people would give you weird looks! Sometimes foundations look great in the mirror but terrible in pictures so it’s worth checking.

hmm.. other little things. i think it’s worth having a ‘brightening’ pen. i use Dior Skinflash. it makes a huge difference to the under eye area.

if you can, check out NARS Cosmetics, their blushes are amazing and they have some great shades for creating a natural glow.

Depends entirely DD what sort of face you have and if you want to learn makeup with contouring as well as in how to enhance you're cheekbones, play down your nose etc. Then you would need to know your eye-shape, whether it's almond or if you have close-set eyes, wide-set eyes. You have to understand where your browbone is, crease is =)

You'll need a good primer, foundation (I prefer sticks as they're easier to blend), loose or pressed powder. Gold/silver/copper/black/blue/green/purple eye-shadows are used more frequently. Then a couple of blushers pink, coral, brown (for diff outfits of your). Lip-pencils, eye-pencils, eye-liners, and lipsticks! Mascara..

You should know you're face and bone structure for the perfect makeup application!

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

practice, practice, practice!

start wearing base to work so you can learn to really blend it in. i use mac's studio fix powder and it works like a dream plus its just a powder so its eaaaasy to apply and offers excellent coverage. and if you wet the sponge before applying, it turns it into a heavier, denser powder for more coverage if you need it.

the only thing it doesn't have is SPF, so i would use a moisturizer with SPF prior to applying any makeup. it'll also prime your skin. i love oil of olay. its non-greasy and my skin absorbs it fast and the powder goes on really smoothly over it.

one thing i wouldn't bother with- too many blushes. you really only need a natural pinky one, i think. pinch your cheeks when you look in the mirror and see where you naturally blush and the color. thats what you should try and match (thats what i did and it works really well, or ask someone at the mac counter. )
bronzer is nice to have if you're really fair and its summertime, but i wouldn't be too stressed about not having one. mac makes really good blushes too and invest in a good blush brush as well.

in terms of eyeliners, again mac makes this fantastic chubby pencil. i have it in purple and black and its like a crayon so it goes on really nicely if you're into the thicker eyeliner look. they also make great softer thinner pencils. color wise, do the basics- black, grey, brown, navy, and a couple of fun colors like purple and dark green maybe, depending on your skin tone. again, a no-brainer. just practice, practice, practice.

get a good mascara. my standard is loreal's voluminous. i've been using it for years and its amazing. it tends to clump a bit so try and keep it upright and that'll prevent the problem. and always take the excess off on a tissue paper before applying. the best thing is its under $10!

lipsticks. this is where you can really have a lot of fun. invest in some fun colors, all based on your skin tone. ask the girls at the beauty counter what'll work best and also use your judgement or take along your sister/best friend/mom/someone who'll be honest with you. you don't really need lipliner either, i'd say, unless you really want to use it. in that case, get a nude liner so it'll blend in with every color of lipstick you get. loreal's makes an amazing, super neutral shade for everyday wear that all the girls i know have tried on and it suits everyone universally, it seems. its called Sand Creme. try that one out.

and thats about it, really.

your basic list should be:
4 basic eyeliners + 2 fun colors if you want (eyeliners are much easier to use IMO and give a more polished look than fussing with eyeshadows)
1 mascara
3 lipsticks = 1 basic, neutral color, 1 fun color (pink or red depending on what suits you, or both if you can pull them off!), 1 cinammon-y/browny shade (again, if it works for you)
1 blush - a nice, natural color
1 powder - something with good coverage like mac's studio fix
1 moisturizer - fast drying, non-greasy, light

nice to have things:
eyeshadows - only if you think you'll really wear them. if you're going to karachi, keep the weather in mind- will it be hot? will it be humid? you don't want your makeup melting off your face, nor do you want to be in a position where its that hot so you have to apply eye primer for the eyeshadow to stay put and not crease.

bronzer - depends on your skin tone. if you have a natural tan look, you won't need it.

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

^ squeee! good post.
i used to to use Studio Fix Powder but i don't think it compares to the finish of Studio Fix Fluid when it's applied with the 187 brush. i think it's much longer wearing too.
i use an olay moisturiser with spf too, so i agree with SGC about this!

i would get a few eyeshadows that you can combine in different way over too many eyeliners though (unless you're a big fan of colourful liners). i use a small angled brush, wet it, and use my darker shadows to line my eyes if i want something different from the usual black. if you do want to go for eyeliners instead, make sure you still have at least two neutral shadows, one for the lid and one as a highlighter.
i have no problems with eyeshadow creasing in hot weather - it's all about getting a proper base. MAC paints (especially bare canvas) is good for this, so is Urban Decay Primer Potion (but it's harder to work with the shadows on top) and recently everyone is raving about MAC Paint Pots as awesome eyeshadow bases (plus they are great on their own), so i would definitely get one or two of these.

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

why not get someone to do it for u?

and i used mac- long lasting, it's fantastic.

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

I started this thread awhile back and was very very helpful…
http://www.paklinks.com/gs/showthread.php?t=281016

I took into account everyone’s recommendations and then I went out on to my make-up hunt!

Sometimes critics/folks would rave one and on about a product and you would think it is the best out there, BUT the bottom line is to try it out for yourself. For example Laura Mercier’s Oil-Free Foundation has been rated best for two consecutive years (2007 & 2008) by numerous beauty magazines (InStyle, Allure…) and also tons of make-up Artists recommend it…BUT when when I tried it on…I felt it provided too heavy coverage and did not have that “matte dewy natural” finish as promised. So at the end of the day you have to try a product to be sure what suits you. I personally found that for combination skin Christian Dior’s ***Diorskin Icone Photo Perfect Creme To Powder Makeup *was way better and had great results.
MAC Studio Fix is also very popular BUT I stayed away from it 'coz so many people claimed that it broke them out! In summers though you are better off staying away from foundation altogether…a more practical alternative would be a Tinted Moisturizer (Lancome, Stila, Laura Mercier… to name a few).
NARS blush are said to be very good but then one of my colleague told me NARS are not as pigmented as MAC blushes and thus have a fade away effect, besides MAC is a bit cheaper than NARS.
Once I saw my friend with this almost natural/perfect cheeks and she told me she finished off her blush with Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Pink…it gave a very soft finish. You can check those out too! There are different shades in them.
One fail proof perfect mascara that requires only one coat (as I was by my make-up lover friend) is Christian Dior
’s *****DiorShow Mascara.
***Eye shadows: They say Stilla, MAC, Smashbox and Sephora’s own brand are good ones!

Mind you I am a person who is not a make-up lover and I believe in “less is more”
My basic make-up routine includes B. Kamins’s face wash followed by Juice Beauty moisturizer, Shiseido Suncreen and Chanel Lipgloss :p…if I ever feel like dressing-Up I add DiorShow mascara to the mix. BTW Juice Beauty is a really really amazing brand with 99% organic stuff no harsh chemicals or synthetic stuff!

I have used Smashbox’s PhotoFinish Primer (Light for combination skin and Regular for normal) just by it self and it is just great to smooth your skin…Totally creates a canvas and skin feels sliky. So If I would ever want to put on stuff on my face, I will apply a primer to begin with. (PS: Primer goes on after the moisturizer and sunscreen :p)

These are all my findings that included a lot of research and first hand testers :stuck_out_tongue:

Best of Luck!!

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

ok this is what ive concluded from the above posts.I should go for mostly MAC products. In Pakistan, we dont have specific MAC Counters, MAC products are available in big superstores and we can get from there. Anyway, here is the short list:

foundations: 'Face and Body Foundation' or 'Studio Tech Foundation' or 'MAC Studio Fix Fluid' or 'mac's studio fix powder' or 'Laura Mercier's Oil-Free Foundation'
Eyeliners-mac (black, grey, brown, navy blue)
Mascara-loreal's voluminous or Christian Dior's DiorShow
lipstick- Sand Creme.which brand is this from?
eyeshadows:MAC Paint Pots
blush on-obbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Pink...

Thank you ladies. You gals are just great! Now i am done with deciding for mascara, liners eye-shadows definitely.

I am still a bit confused on which foundation out of the 4 you all short-listed to use? and i want to know some nice natural pink shades of blush ons? and some light make up natural look (oink/peach) lipstick shades?

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

Daffy - i think we were all just giving suggestions. you really have to go and try stuff out and see what you like!

for instance, MAC do many different kinds of eyeliner - eye pencils, eye kohls, liquid liner, liquidlast liners (VERY bright colours and waterproof), Fluidline (Gel eyeliner in a pot).

so i would suggest that you go to their website:

and read about all the different products before you go to the store. it will give you an idea of what you like the sound of and want to try out. and also what colours things come in, for example, the basic eye pencil only has 4 shades, whereas some of the other kinds may have 10 colours.

Don't forget sponges, applicators and brushes!

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

Gina is right, we all forgot that! Good brushes etc are really important for proper application.

Daffy - i PMed you too :)

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

and a good makeup remover/face wash. i use Clinique's Foaming Face Wash and honestly, i SWEAR by it! i've used so many and nothing takes makeup and grime and crap off, better than this one. plus it smells good and you only need a teeny-tiny, pea sized amount.

Yup ill definitely go and buy stuff. But before i go, i wanted some suggestions and pros & cons for stuff that others have experimented so thought of taking views of GS girls.Thank You everyone. Hopefully, ill be going very soon and will update you all on what kind of stuff i bought.

Stopit, i received no PM till now :(

Oh yes! utmost important .. the sponges, brushes etc. :biggthumb

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

got it? - i sent it again :(

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

yup just did.yipee!

I do ask the girls I go with to purchase makeup with to buy a couple of false eye-lashes and glue as well and a set of GOOD tweezers, and a manicure kit. They always forget those.

Re: Help! Help! Buying/Applying MakeUp

Gina, i already have a tweezers and a manicure kit so i think i dont need to buy another set.
