Help for Summer Camp!

So my Islamic School is having a 4 week summer camp, couple hours each day of the week. One of the things we’ll be doing is cooking lessons for the kids. Kids will be from ages 5-16.

I need some ideas on what to prepare in cooking class that doesn’t require actual cooking. I need 4 items, one for each week, something that the kids will enjoy. So far I have come up with the following:

  1. Sandwiches. We can do cheese, cucumber, chicken [teachers can prepare chicken at home and bring it in]…other suggestions please.
  2. Fruit salad. We can have older kids cut up the fruit and the little ones mix up.

What else?

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

Off the top of my head:

Decorating cupcakes or icing sugar cookies would be fun.

Putting together salads (they can make the vinaigrette/dressing) since it's no cook.

Puting together yogurt/fruit parfaits.

No-bake dessert bars.

Potato or maccaroni salads (pre-boil the potatoes and maccaroni)

I love I love! Thanks Sehrysh!

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

  • Pine apple sofley (mixing of whipped cream, condensed milk, pineapple chunks and jelly)

  • Tuna sandwiches (mix tuna chunks with mayo and shredded lettuce. Can be served on subs or bread)

  • Spaghetti (pre-boiled with chicken chunks can be mixed with sauce etc)

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

Do you have a kitchen at the school that the ladies can use with stove/range and other cooking utensils?

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

Can you not bring a hot-plate in that will cook some stuff?
Noor’s teacher does that in the classroom.

How about vegetable skewers? Older kids can cut up the veggies and the younger ones can skewer. They can each take some home to bbq with parents.

I would do fruit skewers too…like the edible arrangements?
Just get small earth pots from dollar store (1 per child) and let them make 3 or four skewers each…

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

We do have a partial kitchen: sink, oven and microwave. We are trying to avoid using it just because of logistics. If we can do without it, it will be better. The oven is old and hasn't been used in ages. Don't want it to blow. :D I can bring in a hot plate but we have rowdy kids so I'm avoiding that.

I like the fruit skewers idea! And pineapple soufflé!

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

try some juice or lemonade, its summer and the days will be hot.

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

Ice lollies made with fruit juice or lemonade.

oooo lovely!

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

  • decorate giant sugar cookies - cookies already pre made - provide frosting and toppings.
  • make your own ice cream sundae - you provide choices of topping (syrup, m7m, sprinkes, cones, cereal)

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

How many kids are you going to have at camp? If it's a manageable number why not do mini-pizzas if you have toaster ovens available.

Depends on how complicated you want to get - you can make the base out of bagels, tandoori naans or dough.

I suggest this because it would be nice to have some entrees/mains as well as dessert type foods.

Re: Help for Summer Camp!

Probably around 40 kids.

I am trying to avoid using any heat, mainly for safety reasons. We don't have a very good setup.

  1. Peanut butter and jam wheels (confirm no one has allergies). Have them combine the PB and Jam on a wrap, roll it, and then slice so that it makes wheels. Similar to a chocolate swiss role cake.

You can do a similar wheel with spinach dip.

Something like this:

  1. Smiley apples. Slice up apples (with red skin on) into thin slices and spread some peanut butter on them. Use white halal marshmallows in between the two apple slices. It should look like red lips (apple slices) and teeth (marshmallows)

U can call them: Smile! It’s Sunnah Slices

  1. A parfait with oats, fruits and yoghurt. Drizzle with honey

  1. Ice Cream Sandwiches ( yum!)
