Okay, I am living in the States, and I haven’t got any Pakistani outfits newer than 6 years ago, when hemlines were way lower than it seems they are now. I’ve never been into gota-shota.
Well, tomorrow I have to go to an Indian acquaintance’s daughter’s sangeet party. There will be masses of people there. I know almost no one. I hate parties. I’m a hermit. But I’ve got to go (I said I would) and so now I have to figure out what to wear.
My choices are: a cotton Orissi ikat kurta with Patiala shalwar but no fancy dupatta (only a very dull ordinary one,) or a nice silky designer shalwar qamiz from Lahore which while quite the thing for such parties, it is long. Like 3 inches below the knee. I’m not going to cut it – it is sort of, well, not quite Mughal-ish, but at any rate, stylish in that way and it just should be long.
First outfit is very nice texturally, and I might be able to hem it somewhat, but no fancy dupatta – how can I go to a party in it? The second one is long – will I look hopelessly out of date? What should I do, O ye fashionistas? I’m in a quandary!
Go with the second one.
The kameezein are long again.I just got a couple of outfits from back home, and the hemlines are 4-5 inches lower than the knee.
Its the short shirts that look out of date now.

The second outfit sounds much more suitable for the party. The shirts are really long nowadays. Match up with the right accessories to play up the outfit.
Thanks, everybody. I wore the second one, got many compliments and acquitted myself well. Did I enjoy myself?...well, honestly I survived. I would've rather stayed home and did a jigsaw puzzle or read a book or had a friend over for dinner. (I'm not completely antisocial -- I just hate chitchat and noise.)
