Why do Hejras in our country opt to live low life and dance in wedding and newborn event?

Re: Hejra

The practice of keeping ‘khwaja sara’ as guards for ladies quarters goes back to salatin period in India and infact this was followed in Central Asian states first. When these rulers invaded India, this practice was also adapted by Salatin and then by Mughals in India.

Having said that it does not men that these people (third gender) was not there in India before Muslim rule.

As far as the questions of these living apart from society is concerned, then its the so called normal society which detest these people, which lead to seclusion. No one of us will be happy, if he/she got to share a seat in public transport with these people.

Interestingly, these khwaja saras were not handicapped slaves as we normally think about their role in Mughal or other courts. They did played important role in history. One of Khwaja Sara that played important role in 1857 revolt was Mammoo - servant of Hazrat Mahal (queen of Wajid Ali Shah).
