ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has provided a set of CDs containing Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) courses including lectures by MIT professors, to the physics departments in universities all over the country.
The course material includes lecture notes, handouts, assignments and their solutions and in some cases examination questions.
The lecture videos are in Real Media format and require Real Player for viewing, which has been included in the CD’s for the universities’ convenience. Guidelines on usage of the material have also been provided. Several more courses would be sent to the universities as they become available.
The HEC has stressed that the material will be useful only if it is used under an organised system of daily or weekly lectures with subsequent interactive sessions between the faculty and students. The HEC has requested the department heads of physics to distribute the material among colleagues and utilise them in teaching physics. The HEC has also launched a parallel site of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Open Course Ware (MITOCW) on Pakistan Education and Research Network (PERN). The MITOCW is a large-scale web based publication of MIT faculty’s course materials, enabling open sharing of the faculty’s materials with educators and learners around the world. This initiative connects visitors with the syllabi, lecture notes and calendars of 914 courses. Most course sites include a subset of material such as multimedia simulations, problem sets and solutions, past exams, reading lists, sample MIT student projects and a selection of video lectures.
