Heathrow 1 day stay... help advise places to vist..

Hi all,

So i am travelling and will have a 24 hours stay in Heathrow airport London.. This is my first time i want to take advantage of the stay and go around some places near by. I am looking for some tips about the transportation system, how it works and whats the best and cheaper source. What are some of the places that i can go to that are not too far. any other things i should keep in mind while i go out of the airport. I am a US citizen so i am pretty sure i dont need a Visa. yes, you don’t need a visa to enter the UK.

where will you be staying? best bet is take a day/half day escorted tour of the city. these buses leave from major hotels.

i dont have any where to stay thats why i will just roam around … oh thats good to know that there are escorted tours .i wonder how they work and whats the cost.

First things first: You are right, as a US citizen you will not need a visa.

Secondly: Heathrow is located in Western London. There is fast train called Heathrow Express that will take you to the city center in 15 minutes. However that is a quite expensive option. If you buy the ticket in advance it costs £ 34 (approx. US$ 53) for the Return trip and £ 20 (approx. US$ 31) for one-way.

It’s a lot cheaper to take the London tube. But it will take you an hour to get to the city center. It’s gonna cost you £ 5.50 (approx. US$ 8.50) to go one-way, ie £ 11 (approx. US$ 17) to go and come back. If you want to roam around in the city as well, which I assume you want to do, you should go for a Day Travelcard. That will allow you to use all local transportation (tube, bus, trams, local trains, etc.) for an entire day. Costs £ 16.40 (approx. US$ 26) from Monday to Friday and £ 8.90 (approx. US$ 14) on weekends. So if your 24-hour stay is on Saturday or Sunday, the Day Travelcard will actually be cheaper than buying single tickets.

About places to go to: If you wanna do sightseeing you can go to Buckingham Palace, the Big Ben, London Tower, London Bridge, London Eye, etc. All of these places are in or around Central London. If you’re into Desi areas, go to Southall. It’s actually quite close to the airport and has some of the best Desi restaurants. But because there is no direct tube connection you would have to take a bus, so it would still take you an hour to get there from the airport.

Or take the Tube to the British Museum…it’s a fascinating way to spend the day/stopove…and best part is it’s free admission!

@ UMer thankyou it was great help..the tickets are pretty expensive there..so i looked on google and it seems like all these places that you mentioned are not too far from heathrow airport..so thats a good thing for me.. so my other question is that if i buy the day pass does it work in trains and buses…what are some places that i can just go to and then walk from there to other places..being a women is it going to be safe for me to be going around by myself there…

The Tube is the name of the underground/subway rail system that Umer told about above.

The British Museum is amazing. It’s the largest in the workd I believe, dedicated to human life and cultural.

I have actually never used the Heathrow Express myself, but yes I have made good use of my London Travelpass.
