Head scarves in other religions (besides Islam)

Head scarves/veils/hijabs - um whatever you personally call it.

i had a Roman Catholic friend, whose family was very actively religious in the sense that you could tell they were spiritual, they attended church every single week, and had a strong faith in general. She told me that, according to her religious beliefs, she is required to cover her hair - which she did not, but she acknowledged her faith does require her to. (She is in the same situation as me… my inbox is pretty much full, please send your e-fatwas condemning me to hell, later; thank you in advance).

Now i’m wondering. She’s Lebanese and lived in Lebanon for most of her life until immigrating to Canada. i am just wondering - is this a religious edict that is found in Roman Catholicism in general regardless of where you live or is this, perhaps, a mixture of some aspects of religious beliefs but intertwined with cultural beliefs as well. She lived in Lebanon, it’s possible that the Muslim culture mixed with some of her family’s ancestral religious beliefs - know what i’m saying? So is wearing a head scarf an actual part of Roman Catholicism (and for that matter, other faiths), or is it a dynamic mix between culture and religion that leads to nonMuslims being prescribed to wear headscarves?

Just remembered - on tv, they show pictures on the news of Jewish women on Palestinian Territories…and some of them are wearing those bonnet type thingies (that kinda remind me of Amish women). Is that a religious edict as well?

Many Orthodox Jewish women feel it is required that they cover their hair.

i think the head scarf is a very cultrual thing (same in Islam.. i wish my inbox was full so people wouldnt condemn me)

im not sure what religion these people are, but u know those girls who have long beautiful hair and they were those scarves? they all dress alike too... long skirts and full sleeves shirts. They look russian to me

I m a little confused here, is covering their hair a part of their religion or is it covering their head + hair. I'm talking about the jewish and lebanese women.Even though covering the hair includes the whole head but I have seen some girls with head scarf with half hair out of it

^
its good if u lebanese women covering other more cover-needing parts than heads....

and sadz, its not cultural....
the cultural label to hijab has just been given in this century just to make it easier for women to throw off the hijab....

it is not solely an Islamic thing, because I believe jews were documented to have the kind of pardah that isnt even required by Islam, you know, the full face covered thing, in pre islamic times.

armughal.. im from this century so may be i got my wires crossed :)

doesnt the scarf date back to way before moses?

it can be both cultural and religious. a lot of culture is inspired by remnants of religiousity.
