She’s visiting me here in the US and we’re meeting after like 7 years. A few days ago as she was sleeping, I was caressing her head when I found a weird unusual bump … felt kinda like an elbow on the back on her head. when I asked her about it, she said that it’s been there for many years now. She said it doesn’t hurt at all, but she started joking around saying, don’t u know I have a brain tumor. I joked back, but I am worried sick about it ever since. Masha’Allah se she has always enjoyed good health, and family members have never heard her complain of anything illnesses that could be related to it.. but I want to get it checked out. She has an insurance policy which she bought before she came here, but it excludes pre-existing inhuries, basically it’s only for sudden accidents or injuries sustained during her stay abroad. A search on webmd didn’t contribute much… I live in NYC.
I guess I will take her to my doc this weekend, maybe she needs a head scan or something? Any advice/info would be appreciated.
well, as you describe it it's on the outside of the skull. so that is possibly a relieving factor. Cuz it makes the 'classic' brain tumor less likely. However, it can 1001 other things.........can't say much about it, but since u say she has had it for yrs I suspect it isn't that fast-growing: makes a tumor less likely...
However 100% certaintly can only be given if she has a little piece of it removed to view under the microscope.
I realise that it may not be a tumour, being that it's on the outside. Also, she's had it many years and it hasn't been growing, rather it's been pretty much the same size since she can remember. So it doesn't sound so threatening. Maybe she fell down or hit her head somewhere and doesn't remember it. But it's the 1001 other things it could be that are really freaking me out. I suppose we'll only know when we go to have it checked out.
Folks, I don't even know where to start, would I need to take her to a specialist do you think, or would my regular doc who practices internal medicine be able to diagnose it? I know you guys aren't doctors, but I thought maybe someone here may have had a similar experience and may have some advice/suggestions to share.
an internist shud be able to differentiate between suspicious or not. i don’t where such case officially belongs to: surgeon? dermatologist? neurologist?
anyway, i’d suggest first go and see the internist…
LiL Mermaid,
Tumors are usually fast growing. Brain tumor will not show a bump on the head. That would happen only in very little kids. Bone tumors usually dont effect the skull, but even if they do she would have some bone pain, and it would be fast growing.
It can just be some calcification from prior trauma.
But make sure you get it checked. Just go see your doctor and he can check it out and probably get some CT scan done to see what it is. From what you have said, it does not look like anything threatening.
