My Grandparents are thinking about buying a 60 inch Sony Grand wega LCD. Either that or Samsung’s 60’ DLP. Beside the technology the main difference between the two is that the Sony one has a HDTV tuner built in, while the Samsung is just a HD Ready TV. As a former pakistani, I definitely want to go with the Sony one. They both seem to be the best ones we can find. I really want to get someone’s opinion before I get it. What do you guys think?
Re: Hdtv
Mahnoor, my first question to you is why LCD and not Plasma, unless ofcourse you are living at high altitudes? When buying a flat panel television yours is the first question that every one asks. HDTV screens are always more expensive than EDTVs however high resolution does not equate to better picture quality. It also depends on the content you will be watching on it. I never use my plasma TV (HDTV) for watching regular cable or satellite TV. It is only for watching movies. Non HDTVs plasmas may look better with lower end video signals such as cable, satellite TV as well as DVD. A higher resolution allows for better display of computer XGA signals.
No matter what you buy I assure you it will be an awesome experience.
Re: Hdtv
Thanks for replying. The answer to your first question, I really liked the plasmas, but I’m not into getting it wall mounted. Yes, it can sit on a pedesal, but what good is a plasma if its not on the wall. Second, Yes I can go with an EDTV, but why not get HD with a little bit more money. That’s like DVD quality (EDTV) Vs. true hight definition. So far we really like the Sony xs 955. The newer version looks so much better , speakers are not attached to the TV, the casing really makes it look good. But then there is Panasonic and Samsung, which offer pretty much the same thing. The only difference is the HDTV tuner.
We are also thinking about getting Bose’s lifestye 28 or 32 home theater system. Any suggestions? How is Onkyo and Hardmon Kardon as a brand?
Did you get warranty on your plasma? IS it worth spending extra $600 for four years?
Re: Hdtv
Wait a few more months until there is more wide variety of HD programming available....btw the lcds have crappy viewing angles
Re: Hdtv
Devil is right, LCD has crappy viewing angles, so Plasma wins there. The viewing angle for plasma monitors is 160 deg.
LCD has low contrast levels. With out getting too technical, fast pace scene changes from video may cause a trailer effect as LCD screensis slower in reacting to color changes. Plasma will deliver a high contrast, high color saturation and a non distracting viewing.
The only reasons I will go for an LCD monitor are altitude and cost (LCDs are comparatively cheaper). I have a strong personal bias so I dont want to say more.
You just cant go wrong with bose life style system. I have bose acoustimass 10 with an onkyo reciever. I am not sure about Hardmon Kardon as I have never listened to one.
Re: Hdtv
Oh as for warranty, YES, most definitely. My plasma screen developed a vertical line on the third day of viewing. My monitor was replaced within 12 hours of the complaint.
Re: Hdtv
LCD’s and cheaper? You sure? I found plasmas to be cheaper. I think I’ll get it this weekend. Thank You for your help ![]()
Re: Hdtv
Buy a Sony, theyre one of the best, which is why they are so damn heavy in weight..My Tv repairman buddy said their picture tubes are so good thats why they way like twice as much..
Re: Hdtv
50-B i have a feeling ur repairman buddy will soon be searching for another profession, since it obvious he doesnt know north from south.
Re: Hdtv
Yes 50 B, what is this picture tube talk all about?
Mahnoor,
come on tell us how was the viewing experience, and also how you wish that you had listened to me and gone for the plasma. Well I told you so (i wanted to say that so bad).
Re: Hdtv
LOL :)
The delivery is scheduled for thursday. We bought the Sony 60' with Bose lifestyle 28 or 32 home theater system. Don't worry. Everything is returnable in America. If we are not satisfied with the picture quality, we'll just get the Samsung DLP. But I will never give you a chance to say "I told you so" :p
Re: Hdtv
My question is about "burn". How long can you watch a channel without getting its logo burnt on the screen?
2-3 plasmas I have seen at friends' places have Prime TV logo burnt there, where it is permanently fixed now. They were telling me that 20 mins is the limit (really????). And that is why US channels disappear the logo every few minutes, to ensure the logo doesn't burn on the screen... but Pak channels couldn't be bothered and hence the logo is "burnt" on the screen.
Any ideas?
Re: Hdtv
Faisal, you are right ghost images are a problem, however, the good news is that different manufacturers are coming up with different techniques, for example the one I have shifts the image by so many pixels after a certain time period. The shift is so slight that I have not been able to detect it even after full concentration. There are also techniques to remove remove the ghost images if that occurs. I have a wide screen (16:9 aspect ratio) monitor so watichg channels with full screen picture was a problem as I had to change the aspect ratio to 4:3 which left two gray lines on the on the sides, continuous viewing caused these ghost bands on the sides. I now only use it for movies. If you are buying a Plasma to watch regular TV transmission it is advisable to go for a full screen set.
