It is documented ...
If someone wanted to learn to read and write he (SAW) would send them to the people who had that knowledge.
The Arabian mode for learning and teaching was through the oral traditions. That is why they had expert memorisers because that was the main method transmission of information was maintained. By mouth!

To All Brothers of Islam
Brothers please In the Name of God just stay calm and consider these points:
1- Prophets are the Man who usually are the Most Knowledgeable, Most Educated, Most Civilized Persons among the society.. You will Never found any Prophet who have something less comparing to others! I do believe that if anyone even men of 1400 years before would ask Prophet about Computers, Robots and other technology then Prophet should have to answer them as Prophet is representing Allah's Knowledge....
2- Reading and Writing since the earlier days are known as Noble acts and the persons who knows acquire more respect then who dont know... So was there any person who is more respectable in any term then the Prophet...
3- Prophet (PBUH) was brought in the house of Hazrat Abu Talib and Sons of Hazrat Abu Talib i.e Aqeel, Jafar, Ali knew how to read and write then how it is possible that Prophet who were passing life in the same house wont know (dont misjudge it that He (PBUH) got any sort of schooling, No one can educate Prophet in any sense)
4- And Brother PSYAH wroted that education was Oral... So dear if it was Oral then Why Prophet asked people to Write Quran and Ahadees and there were so many SO Called Katiban e Wahi......The term Katiban e Wahi reveals that the education were not Oral.....**
