You have it wrong, particularly the exaggeration: "and **all* renowned commentators say ..."*
Ibn Kathir (d. 774H), a renowned commentator, reports from Ibn Abbas (r), Anas ibn Malik (r), Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, Abu 'Uthman al-Nahdi and Ikrimah who all said that it was revealed concerning Suhayb ibn Sinan al-Rumi (r) whose people prevented him from migrating to Madinah after he accepted Islam. Whilst according to Ibn Kathir himself, the majority view is that the verse is general and applies to every person who makes jihad in Allah's path.
Al-Tabari (d. 310H) in his Tafsir begins by applying the verse to Suhayb ibn Sinan al-Rumi as well and after citing reports to that effect and mentioning that the verse could apply to all of the emigrants (muhajirun) or helpers (ansar) only then goes on to say that some said it relates to 'Ali (r).
Al-Suyuti (d. 911H) in his commentary al-Durr al-Manthur reports from Ibn Jurayj that it refers to Suhayb ibn Sinan (r) and Abu Dhar (r) and he cites from Ibn Mardawiya, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Asakir and Abu Nu'aym in his work al-Hilyah all with reports from Suhayb ibn Sinan (r) himself about this.
In Tafsir al-Jalalayn it mentions only Suhayb ibn Sinan (r) as is also the case in the abridgement of al-Shawkani's (d. 1250H) Tafsir.

Not correct as per one recognised interpretation of the verse under discussion which goes on to say: "So Allah sent down His tranquillity upon him..." That this tranquillity descended on Abu Bakr (r) is a possibility mentioned by leading Qur'an commentators, such as al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir and al-Suyuti. It is also the view reported from Ibn Abbas (r), that it descended on Abu Bakr (r). Also the verse:
"Certainly Allah was well pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity on them and rewarded them with a near victory." (48:18)
Abu Bakr (r) was present for this, not excluded.
As well as for:
"Then Allah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and sent down hosts which you did not see, and chastised those who disbelieved, and that is the reward of the unbelievers." (9:26)
The latter referring to the Battle of Hunayn during which Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Ali, may Allah be well-pleased with them all, among others held firmly to the reins of the Prophet's (s) riding animal at a time when a number of Muslims retreated. This is mentioned in Sirat Ibn Hisham with a hasan (fair) chain of transmission according to Akram Diya al-'Umari.

Wrong example. The verse under discussion quotes the Prophet (s) as saying: "Fear not, for Allah is with us." With "us", including Abu Bakr (r), so this is a praiseworthy form of companionship unlike the example you pointed to.

When Hazrat Fatima was near her death and was seriously ill Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) went to her house and many misundestandings were cleared.. as all are human beings and differeces do occur between them they did sprung up between them earliar.. that was the reason ** Hazrat Ali (RA) openly did baiyt at the hands of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) right after she died.. **
But there were still people at that time who tried to create rumors and hatrad and there are still many who do it till date..
Why can't we all discuss things we all agree upon rather than keeping on comparing personalities? How many of you out there sincerely follow Imam Ali's footsteps- or can claim the same about Abu Bakar's life for that matter!!!

So when Hazrat Ali (RA) did it later he was wrong? Where did truth go when he actually did bayt in front of whole ummah? Come with a better argument.. he did bayit when misunderstandings were removed.. its never late to do good deeds. I know a lot of hate mongers were disappointed with this noble act of Hazrat Ali (RA) as they were hoping confrontrations amongs these great personalities!

one thing that I don't get is that I have tremendous respect for Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Fatima and all their descendents. And I do believe that Yazeed was not a Khalifa, he was a tyrant. So, where's teh difference. He was responsible for some very barbaric acts that must be condemned by all. why continue harping on about something that happened so long ago and is totally meaningless now save for the lesson?
we don't need debates of who offended who, who apologized to who, who cursed who. we would do well to think about more important issues, some of which (heaven forbid) ought to be about our individual spirituality rather than Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Umer and Usman's respective faiths.
