Re: Having a baby outside of marriage?
there is this guyanese family at our masjid. A large family consisting of aunts, uncle and cousins who are pretty active in the masjid. One of the sons (who used to be in our halaqa) was going out with this girl (muslim, but not sure where she is from) and they were engaged to be married. They got married, and had beautiful twin girls 7 months later. The mother of the guy told us she was two months preggers when they got married (not sure why she told us..lol..she didnt seem proud of the fact…more like embarrased).
another family friend that i know, had a big nikkah function, but the families (relatives of each other) wanted to do the rukhsati the next year. The girl ended up gettign pregnant during this year (the coudple dindt live together but with their own parents), and ended up having a small rukhsati function at her home when she was a couple of months pregnant. So harm Islamically, in what they did. But I think it was shame and embarrassment for the parents that they cancelled their big rukhsati celebration. Mashallah, 13 years later (mabye even more) is now one of the most religious couples I know.
In the second case, Islamically, the couple didn’t commit any gunnah. Nikaah is sufficient to consumate the marriage. Rukhsati is more a cultural thing. But socially, yes, because it is a cultural thing, it is expected that the girl and guy would hold off on intimate relations until after the rukhsati.
