My dad is way old school on this. He thinks praising the kids on their face will make them too proud and they will mess up. Instead he talks to me about how his friend’s kids are the best.

Yes, and it’s nice but kinda cringe at the same time, because I hate people telling me things like that. Also, I guess for people who’s parents rarely, or don’t praise them at all just means that they’re trying to push you to do better and improve.

Most of the time which im so thankful for. They have never expressed that iv’e ever been a disappointment to them (not that I am lol).

No I was never praised and even if I did well in exams, I was asked why I didn’t do better and I was always compared to my eldest brother and their friends kids, as in so and so got this… They thought it would encourage me to study harder but it put me off. Only when they stopped after i got my BSc did I start to work harder to eventually get my professional qualification. It has really affected my self esteem and I have low confidence.
With my daughter, I praise her a lot and she thrives on praise, it makes her work harder although she is only in P1. I reward her when she gets a certain number of stars in her homework and she is always eager to count the stars when she gets her homework back. And even when she helps me with little things around the house I thank and praise her which has made her quite self sufficient in herself at quite a young age.

yes they do whether the achievements are big or small and also on the efforts that might have not been fruitful in the end but nevertheless they appreciate that effort was made.

Nope. My dad used to show he was proud of me by kissing my forehead or buying a small gift but never in words. My mom on the other hand is the definition of an Asian parent haha. For example, once I got an A in some big project and when I shared it with her, she said “woh bhi tou parents hain, jin kay bachey A+ lai kay atay hain.” Yes, it has killed my self esteem a bit (ok maybe a lot) but sometime ago, I was talking to my dad and out of no where he told me that he was very proud of me, I was moved to tears. I didn’t realize how much that meant to me.

Though my parents are very conservative in praise, they did tell me when I good excellent grades in school and college. Lately its when they have to go for some healthcare related thing and are given extra protocol.

Yes. Actually more than my liking so I decided to tone it down by achieving less in academics, sports and philanthropy. Worked quite well for me.

Everyday, more or less. I’ve never been one that needs external validation, self validation is all I need!

My mother kissed my forehead and her eyes were shinning like stars with happiness on the day I gave her my first income/salary.
That feeling can’t be bought, it’s simply priceless.
And parents are proud of their children of course but when they accomplish something in life that pride can be easily seen in their eyes, communication even by physical acts.
Such a beautiful thing I must say!
