Exactly the first statement is you dont have to follow SOT to become a muslim but the next statment if you dont you become a deviant.
Then Abu Hanifa must be the biggest deviant he did not have any SOT, according to the logic provided i can go ga ga ga over this topic but i have certainly lost interest coz what i have understood is unless we dont realize ourselves (esp in forums its just not possible).
Ab koi indo-pak moulvi ko bulayo mujhe fatwa pass karne ke liye.
On top of that, I believe Abu Hanifah was a "Hanif", as in the definition given in the Quran... Fiqh Akbar (awwal) has some strangeness to it that is not echoed in the revision that I think was published by his protoge after Abu Hanifah's improsonment... I wonder why :) No fatwas here though :D
I think every muslim should have that fear but then we should also have that hope for mercy as well. One thing I do agree with what Sis Hareem stated is that schools of thought are different from sects. I haven’t read the detail of the hadith about 73 sects though I have read it many times sparingly. I do not know if sect in the hadith means difference in juristic rulings or differences in the primary belief.
I try to understand everything from the view point of Quran and Sirah first. I rarely take a hadith in isolation and after that all Imams or great jurists are eventually scholars of different degrees. I have nothing to follow from them but only to learn from them.
SlaveofAllah, you know better than me that Imam Abu Hanifa was a great scholar. Even today if a scholar has the ability to make his own rulings by going over the Quran and Hadith, they can well do so (ie: they don’t have to follow a SoT).. BUT when it comes to the regular person it is not possible, even the Alims of today don’t dare to make their own rulings. The regular joe will make a mistake and that is what sister Hareem meant by “become deviant”. If you look at what rulings you apply in your life, it’s most likely that they have come from one of those four great Imams (of course at the end all is from Quran and Sunnah). “Salafis” do get confused on issues of fiqh and it’s because of them that there is much conflict between the traditionalists. I do not solely blame them but in the past century or so, they have brought a “revolution”… and not a good one at that.
A little off-topic:
Recently, Bilal Philips compiled a list of sites, ranking them from best to worst, labeling the worst ones at DEVIANT! The usual best sites were of course salafi sites like islam-qa…etc http://www.bilalphilips.com/bilal_pages.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=316
anyways, this is to show us that how much of a difference people have..
This is probably where I disagree with you. This statement that is very profound in its implications. When you are acknowledging new rulings in Islam you basically talking about new commands and prohibitions. This very expanse of jurisprudence has made Islam alien to the common masses and more of a scholars religion with them in full control of how people should act and behave and what to think and what not. I think jurisprudence should stop at guidance and recommendations instead of commands and prohibitions. The commands and prohibitions are clearly spelled for us in Quran and Sunnah. After that no jurisprudence or laws that even the greatest of scholars may come up with are absolutes or parallel to the commands and prohibitions in the Quran and Sunnah.
I was joking yaar nothign offensive i myself do not adhere to any sect. I respect all the imams and love all the imams i repeatedly spoken about this, but thing is that we shudnt go to extremes this is my view point. But other than that Allaahknows thebest.
Like yousaid exactly for a normal person its really difficult coz of being deviant thats one reason he has to adhere to some SOT, (but some reading has to be done no blind following) and i was joking with sister HAREEM no offense to her Masha Allaah she is a very good muslimah (i respect her).
Just a hunch the kattar salafis call Bilal philips a deviant go to www.salafitalk.net aur mazaa aayega according to them most are deviants.
Bro USRes, I didn't mean that scholars come up with NEW rulings. There are laws which a layman cannot interpret clearly, that is why you need a scholar who has the knowledge.

I think if a person follows the five pillars and tries his hardest that no harm should come to anyone from himself as well as stays away from the major sins and has hope in the mercy of Allah, than surely Allah will forgive him.
Remember, Allah treats a person according to their expectations of him.
People should clear the misconception that SOTs started after the 4 imams or during their time. Each Imam has an origin for his teachings, its just that that specific Imam in a sense Codified them.
NO new rulings or prohibitions are introduced in sects, its more like they're organized so more people CAN come into islam without any problem, and those who are already muslims may have a guide as to how to do things.
The origins I speak of go back to the time of the Sahabahs r.a.
You see after the Death of the prophet, IMams such as Ibn Abbas, Ibn Masud, Zain ibn Thabit r.a used to pass rulings, and the 4 SOTs that exist today are due to those Imams after the Prophet pbuh that made Islam easier for laymen to follow.
Nothing new, just in a sense more in tune with the common folk who aren't as learned.
I think this needs to be corrected......There is a big difference between** sects and schools of thought.** The famous schools of thought are Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali, they are not a group but fiqh and their rulings are based on different opinions of Sahabah(ra). Four of them have minor differences regarding different issues.
All the traditional muslim Scholars follow each school of thought though they might have knowledge of all four fiqhs.
we all know about Imam Abu Hanifah(ra), Imam Malik, Imam Hanbal and Imam Shafi .I don't think they were wrong as they were all great scholars and they based their opinions on different Ahadith also according to a hadith if an alim(or amir) makes a right ruling he gets two rewards and if he makes a wrong ruling then he still gets one reward.
Please do read the biographies of these four great scholars. You don't have to follow any school of thought in order to become muslim, but then most people without a school of thought become deviant.
Allah hu Alim
Well put. I mostly agree...
I believe If a person can strike a balance between reasoning and belief. and can admit mistakes/faults ,correct himself on awaikening then there are bright chances of success.
