That must suck, do they hate muslims? I remember meeting this kid from southern Georgia during freshman orientation that had never met a muslim before lol, he looked really scared. I’m glad I live in Texas, it’s better than the other southern states.
I mean, it is a state known for its lack of diversity and deep seated prejudices against “other” people. A town in Arkansas (Harrison) actually has (or had) the KKK headquarters. It is pretty funny though, there are so many backwards ass areas in Arkansas that have people exactly like that. My dad runs a business in a small ass town and there are so many people coming up to him giving him the “you’re one of the good ones” speech because he is active in the community and is sociable (wow, who woulda thunk huh?). Some guy in my freshman orientation trip came from another small ass town and was just so fascinated by one of our trip leaders (she is a Muslim hijabi) and asked her all kinds of questions about the hijab and why she wore it, all that. It is truly amazing the caricatures they people create in their heads.
Yeah the “you’re one of the good ones” comment always makes me cringe, it’s like a backhanded compliment. I feel for all the minorities and Muslims that live in hickass towns in the south. I don’t think ever could move there lol even if I pass for mexican, I don’t think it makes it better.
Have a good friend originally from Punjab Pakistan living in Louisiana where there are these mixed race people who are French and African,
since he looks like them so they call him Coon A*s ,
however he has lived there for over 40 years, now he jokes about it! now He can claim that He is the First Rajput Coon *ss
Myself have never experienced racism in real life situations Alhumdolillah!
**except a few times some nasty remarks by Gupshup Members!
I wonder why some people feel they can get away with racism and personal insults while hiding behind an assumed Avatar **
My mom doesn’t speak English very well. So whenever we go shopping and she asks an associate for help, the associate will speak in a very rude manner. I’ll often have to interrupt the conversation and their whole attitude changes and they will be really helpful.
I was in a similar situation during college orientation in summer. I took a look around the group I was touring with and realized I was the only non-Caucasian. When we had to sign up for our login credentials we had to line up to a table with a lady sitting behind a laptop. The lady had a very nasty attitude and wasn’t pleasant at all to speak to when it was my turn. She was nice and bubbly to the students before and after. That’s when I felt really alone, insecure and started hating college.
That sucks, what state are you in? If your college isn’t the right fit for you then you can transfer to a more liberal one with the crowd. Maybe join an msa or a fraternity, you’ll get to know more people.
