Re: Have you ever been discriminated against?
This was back in 2007, getting married and moving to a hick town, went to do groceries one day by myself wearing a shalwar/kameez
When I went to pay for the items, handed her a $100 bill, the cashier looked at me up and down with disgust and said ‘Weeeee dooooon’t taaaaaake aaaaaa hundreddddd dolllllaaaarr billlll’. Dooooo
youuuuuu understaaaannnnd meeeee?
I flinged my sunglasses off and told her I understood just fine and now she can keep the darn groceries, and left the store. Came home and called the store to talk to the manager and told him what
happened, threatened to report this incident to the head office, he begged me not to and told me come back to start shopping at the store. I said ‘No’ and never returned. I did report it to the head office
of the grocery chain
Re: Have you ever been discriminated against?
Yes. By Arabs.
Re: Have you ever been discriminated against?
The place where I work presently, I got a phone call from the interviewer post-interview. He asked if I usually wear a head covering to work. I wasn’t wearing one to the interview so I was surprised that he asked. He explained that some Muslim girls don’t wear one to the interview for fear of discrimination but once hired, they’ll show up to work wearing one. I asked him if I did that, would it be a problem? He said, it might not sit well with certain senior partners and clients.
When I started working here, I asked him if there is a place in the office where I could pray Zuhr during my lunch hour. He said: if I were you, I wouldn’t do that so openly, as it would make a lot of people uncomfortable.
I didn’t bring up a religious matter to his attention after this, but I have on occasion prayed in the office basement where hardly anyone goes. My previous office had a prayer home for people of all faiths and it was perfectly fine to book it for 15 min and pray whenever. Current workplace is a small office and everyone is up in everyone else’s business. So I kind of have to be careful.
Re: Have you ever been discriminated against?
One of my uncles is quite fair and can often be mistaken for an Arab. Back in 2001, he used to drive a cab in the NY/downtown Manhattan area. Post 9/11, he was stopped at gunpoint by some gang members who made him sit on the ground with hands behind his head, facing away from them. They took his cell phone, watch, wallet, etc. and cursed at him to go back to where he came from. One of them held a gun to his head and kicked him until he fell and his forehead started bleeding. They almost shot him that night. The whole thing happened very quickly and if a car hadn’t been passing that area, Allah knows what could have happened. My uncle was so shaken up that he gave up taxi business after that incident.
Re: Have you ever been discriminated against?

Re: Have you ever been discriminated against?
This one time, a white guy did not hold the door open for me.
At work, someone threw my makeshift lota in the bin.
The Tim Horton’s guy wrote “Osama” on my friend’s hot chocolate. Oh no it was me who wrote that. And I know hot chocolate, right? What a fairy.
Yes, on airports…because of the green passport !! ![]()
