@Huma. Here is an example of the intolerance from ssome senior members and moderators in the All views gay/lesbian friends. The insertion of religion to marginalize one segment of our society was informative. And no, you were just fine. My comments not directed at you.
Remember this threats was in All Views, not Religion.
Some sample comments
A man known by company he keeps
being gay is a sin.
I don’t want to mentally normalize this situation
homosexuality is not approved by any standard.
Is being gay normal in any country?
Abnormal and unnatural
Dos this mean murderer’s thieves and other criminals are natural too?
Quelran Bible Torah call homosexuality erong
Why would you hang with sinners?
Homoaexuality forbidden in Islam. End of discussion. You consider yourself a Muslim - you better off without the homo thing. (Moderator).
Using religion for hate discrimination and isolation of a community. Is what I referred to. Nothing to do with you.
If you truly believe in freedom of religion, the religious boasting shouldn’t be too annoying but more a reason to celebrate that it is still a possibility today.
Oh I get the point, alright. Thou shalt not boast and that includes not saying Allah knows best even if you truly believe that He does know best. Why that induces an allergic reaction though, is what’s hard to fathom.
I didn’t mean to barge in and jump on to people’s throats but I was just wondering.
One one hand you say you love Islam as a religion and you love people here but then you get peeved if people in a majority Muslim forum say ‘Allah knows best’ or ‘Islam is the best’ :hinna:
If I know a Christian guy/girl on a Christianity dominated online forum and I often find people remarking Jesus is all Knowing or Jesus is the son of God, would I start bashing him or in politer tones get annoyed for what he says? It’s his belief. It’s his right to say so. But yeah if he goes on to ridicule other faiths, i would be ticked off for sure. But I will definitely not create hue on that platform about how they keep ‘boasting’ about their religion and keep reinforcing their faith in their posts. For one, it’s a Christian majority forum and for other I do not expect them to stop talking about their religion just because I being a minority finds it ‘annoying’
As far as I know, religion is a deep rooted ideology in human-beings. if a person follow a particular religion, he does believe it to be the best. Religion is like a path you chose or you inherited for making your journey of life. In most of the cases, people believe their own religion to be the best path carrying them to the destination.
Keeping this in mind, the sentences (Islam is the best, Allah knows the best) you mentioned are normal. A person say what he believe in. But this is not by anyway means that person saying these things disrespect other religion, unless he / she specifically insult or say something negative about the other’s belief.
Let me share one thing with you. I also come across many comments by posters which degrade religious thoughts and religious practices. For example, a poster comparing another’s ideology with well’s frog, just because other person quoted a verse from Quran to make a point that severity of earthquake in future was foretold in Quran. Now we Muslims consider Quran to be word of Allah and anyone calling a person or his ideology that of a frog is highly offensive to us. IMHO , the person who called others ideology (based on Quran) as of frogs should have not participated in a discussion which was against his beliefs rather than offending other posters.
Even the most learned Muslim scholar will say Allah knows best; it’s a common saying. If I say Allah knows best, it’s not because I’m cheerleading. Rather it’s a humble admission of the limitation of my knowledge and that Allah, the only God I believe in, has complete knowledge of past, present, future, and the unseen.
If it bothers you that I didn’t say bhagwan/ram/vishnu knows best, could that possibly be a reflection of your own insecurity? Why would I say bhagwan or Jesus or Bhuda or even Muhammad SAWS knows best when that is not in my faith’s teachings, in my holy book, or in my iman? Why would a Christian or a Jew say that Ram knows best? They wouldn’t because it’s not in their religion. It’s a no-brainer. If it’s the word Allah that bothers you, then know that it’s not confined to the Muslims. Even the Pak/Arab Christians and Jews say Allah.
First, thank you for being polite. Hope things are well with you.
The Allah knows best was one example. The bigger point I was trying to make
If someone says other Gods are equally competent, that becomes offensive.
Another observation of mine has been this
All of the bigoted comments in the gay/lesbian friends thread have come from those who are religious. Please see my post re: the gay/lesbian thread in All Views.
Let me clarify to avoid confusion - not ALL religious people made bigoted comments. But ALL bigoted comments came from religious people.
It is unfortunate tha this aspect is not being acknowledged.
I do love Islam because I know lots of nice people - inclufing you Huma and Muzna - who are religious and nice.
PS - please visit our Financial Nuggets thread. It is dying!
First let me say I really appreciate your posts. You are polite and never throw insults. In fact, I can honestly say I can learn a lot from you about polite discourse. Hopefully I am incorporating that approach in this thread.
I totally agree religion is faith based. And that it is normal to feel ones religion is the best. I hope you read my post to Enig. It was disappointing to see all bigoted comments on the gay lesbian thread coming from religious folks.my point that I clumsily tried to make - keep it real. Rather than incessant cheerleading, focus on humanity.
How easy it was for religious people in that thread to marginalize gays and lesbians. How acceptable it was.
WE GET INSULTED WHEN SOMEONE ATTACKS OUR RELIGION. CAN WE SHOW THE SAME OUTRAGE WHEN SOMEONE MARGINSLIZES AN ENTIRE SEGMENT OF SOCIETY? PLEASE?
Not everyone’s point of view will be same as yours. Others’ faiths have different definitions of what is and is not acceptable. You may find that hard to believe, but there exist people who are religious and take guidance strictly from the articles of faith regarding their daily lives.
If you find it extremely difficult to transition to that, we will gladly assist you and restrict your access so that you may save yourself the inconvenience of having to comprehend others’ perspective, let alone open discussion based solely on why others are not transforming to your view of things.
As mentioned earlier by another user, a majority of the users here are muslim, and thus their view of things will be from an Islamic point of view. I hope that is clear. This is a fact that you either live with and adopt to an agreeable measure if you wish to participate and be an active member here, or you may find a place that is more conducive to your mindset. I’m sure it will be no big loss.
