Rat People of Pakistan:

To Some, They Are Victims Of Cruel Abuse, To Others, They Are Messengers From God.

Thousands of beggars can be seen on the streets, writes Akhtar Soomro from Karachi, but some of them are different. People call them ‘Chuwas’ from their rodent-like appearance. The name means ‘rat’

Some believe that the chuwas have special powers. Give them money and they will touch you on the shoulder conferring a blessing. But no one discusses the origins of the chuwas

If you ask them some will say they were born with those funny shaped heads. Others will talk nervously of abandoned or kidnapped children taken by gangs and elevated to adulthood in cruel savagery.

They talk of heads bound in steel cuffs and feet squeezed into iron shoes. Normal mental and physical growth is impossible and the results are tiny shrunken heads with ill-looking compressed features, large fleshy ears, retarded mannerism, gobs of spittle bubbling from mouth and a life spent dispensing blessings by day and being beaten at night at the hands of their ‘keepers.’

The chuwas are then hired like monkeys to professional beggars on a contract basis, where their deformities attract the sympathy and the small change of the passers-by

In this way one chuwa can make as much as 7,000 rupees a month for his minder - the salary of a middle-graded Pakistani civil servants.

International humanitarians and the government of Pakistan should take serious notice of this inhuman practice which is not only a gross violation of human rights but also a crime against humanity.

I have seen them a few time in Pakistan, but i thought it was from ALLAH, i couldnt imagine that these people were deformed because their head was bound in steel to prevent growth. Its so sad what people will do for money and business. I never knew this practice existed, nor could i imagine that we could stoop so low. To prevent a child from growing physically and mentally, using them for begging and then beating them (which im sure the owners do), is a serious crime. Its literally taking away a life from a child by making them mentally and physically handicapped. Are there any laws in Pakistan to prevent this? Is there anythingbeing done by the pakistani govt about this? If yes, what r they doing about it and how r they helping in ending this inhuman behavior?

Truly sad. Nobody takes notice of such inhumane practices.

I think various practices such as this are known all over Pakistan but for some reason people don’t dwell in them. I doubt if the government hasn’t heard about them but obviously you can’t expect them to enforce laws for such horrific acts. Even if they did, these guys would find another sick way of earning money.

there is too much of such crimes that have to be stopped in pakistan....
may Allah protect the people from people who dont fear Allah and go about comitting such acts....

It is indeed sad. Sometimes these ppl who don;t have kids ko to mizaars and stuff and promise to give in their first born if they have a child. And eventually when they do have children they actually give it in and this is what happens. I believe there was a specific mizaar this started from. If I;m not mistaken it was Shah Daula ka mizaar and thats why they are called shahdaulas and shahdaulis...I think. I could be mistaken about the origin of theese names but that is what they are called in rawalpindi.
