Most Pakistanis are familiar with Bollywood films. Besides Bollywood, there are many films made in Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu which are much better content wise and well made. Many of these films are subtitled in English. These films are not made with very high budget (except Tamil and Telugu) but have a great storyline and powerful performances.

I have watched umpteenth---with English subtitles.
Some cross the boundaries-way ahead--some were abdolutely nonsensical--some were highly classical--some were juvenile stuff--
and some only 'were' !!! but we all know--on viewership in INDIA the percentage count on watching Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Benglai movies---is far above then that of Urdu or--Hindi ones.
My hero on Malayalam movies have been RAJNIKANTH...who did good in Urdu ones also.....!

OOPS Rajnikanth is Tamil Actor and Famous Mallu actors are Mohan Lal, Mamooti(Muslim) and Shakila (only** A** :) films)
Re: Have any Pakistanis watched Indian Regional films?
pls list some good regional movies.
i loved Titli (bengali film) and i really wanna see some good Satyajit Ray films. in marathi films, i saw chaukat raja many years ago, which was really good.
the thing with regional films is, it's hard to appreciate them because of the many cultural nuances.. esp when it comes to humour, these things are just understood, they cannot be translated/explained easily.
lakkis, at my school, there was a gang of mallus which was divided into the mohanlal party and the mamooti party, lol... it was rather amusing to watch their emotionally charged debates on the merits of these two actors, esp since i didn't understand a word!

Much better content ? Really ?
You are allowed to promote the cause of the underdog (just like many people claim that Mac OS is better than Windows) but don't lose your sense of reason.
I would say that 80% of regional movies (just like Bollywood) is UTTER RUBBISH. Don't romanticize regional movies by making it seem as if all of them are made by directors of the stature of Satyajit Ray.
Go watch Sun TV for 2 hours and come back and tell me if you find over-fed obese ladies gyrating around trees to double entendre lusty songs as being of much better content.

MAMOOTY...is another class...of his own. I loved his movies too!
Re: Have any Pakistanis watched Indian Regional films?
Well, not all regional films are great. some are like a more crapier version of -Z grade Bollywood movies.
well, some of the superb Bengali films, except the Satyajit Ray ones, which are all masterpieces, are Paromitar ek din, sopnor ferewala, chowrongie lane,The bong connection, antarmahal(i dont knw why ppl critize it, i loved it),choker bali, dosar,Bow Barracks Forever etc etc. there are many more such movies, my memory is dud. most are art film-ish, but then only art film have better content.
a word of advice, remain ten miles away from any Mithun Bengali films, they are craps.
i think Aparna Sen and Rituporno Ghosh are the best Bengali film-makers at present.
Aparna's next is "The Japanese Wife" where the hero(Rahul Bose), a humble teacher in a village, has a Japanese pen pal(some new Japanese actress) in Japan.i think they end up marrying, and what follows is humourous disasters and mis-communication.the film has Raima Sen as a widow with a son and has Moon moon Sen as Rahul's aunt. Konkona Sen Sharma was the initial choice for Raima's role, but she had some Yash Raj commitments(Laaga and Aaja Nachle).the film is yet to release.
Re: Have any Pakistanis watched Indian Regional films?
Marathi films were very good to begin until 80-90's when they lost steam. Last five years there have been great Marathi films.
Marathi filmakers have realised that they cannot bring audience with Bollywood style movies. They need to have substance like theater. Some of the good movies are Shwaas, Uttarayan, Devrai, Maati Maay, Dombivali Fast, Doghi, Sinhasan, Umbartha, Dahavi Fa, Restaurant.
There have been good Kannada and Malayalam films too.
Re: Have any Pakistanis watched Indian Regional films?
i wanted to see Shwaas and Mati Maay.....you dont get marathi movies here easily!
Re: Have any Pakistanis watched Indian Regional films?
oh yes, i have to say one thing...sorry if any Bojpuri is here, but most of the promos that we get to see of the Bojpuri films(belive me we had a Bojpuri channel for a short time), they look complete craps. they have always titles like "Hamar sajan Hindustani etc etc. there has to has to be a "Hamar" in the title!!! and actresses are always FaT, and the hero is always Ravi Kissan-wa. again, sorry if i offened anyone!
