Hats off to DAWN

Being a somewhat regular reader of DAWN (internet edition) I have come to believe that even though DAWN is a more moderate newspaper among the Paki dailies, it still shows great reluctance to report news that are positive from the Indian perspective.
I have seen this trend in political news but I now see that DAWN’s misplaced patriotism is beginning to reflect on its sports section as well.

Look at this sports page from 16-MARCH-2002 : http://www.dawn.com/2002/03/16/spt.htm
This page has a news item on Ganguly’s statement that the India-Zimbabwe one-day match to be played on that day is a do-or-die match for his team.

Now look at the sports page from 17-MARCH-2002: http://www.dawn.com/2002/03/17/spt.htm
Do you see any news item regarding Indian winning that match against Zimbabwe. NO. Does this have anything to do with the fact that India won the match. You would think so considering that they could find space to report the postponement of a Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation Motorcycle Rally. And NewZealand-England, Australia-South Africa test matches all find mention.

When India loses a match, you should see how gleefully it is reported… the news item is right there on the top…

Taking the Pakistani perspective on issues is one thing, selectively reporting events is another.

Get over it pal. Dawn's news comes a bit late, watch out for tomorrow's edition. Also, no to forget it was a day-night match and It would have been tough for them to report as Pakistan's time is 30 mins ahead of India

AK

Also their internet edition is always late. Its not like TimesofIndia or Other Indian website who r so fast in repoting.I guess they need to improve technology and turnover time.

Ok, I concede that I may have jumped the gun here. Yes, its true that DAWN like almost all other Pakistani Internet news websites publishes news much later after it happens. Infact DAWN's "Latest news" section is hardly latest. That reminds me , I posted a thread on the quality of Pakistani news web-sites in the "Pakistan Affairs" forum and sure enough it met a premature death at the hands of the moderators.

Now coming back to the subject... maybe the news about the one-day will get reported tomorrow.. no big deal.. considering it wasn't such a great victory after all..
but I will still stand by my comments regarding the pattern that DAWN displays when reporting "good news" from Indian perspective. I do not have time now to elaborate... will come back on this later.

Quit whinning, I'm preety sure DAWN is not your only source of finding result of Indian cricket matches.
There are alot of sporting events going around the world rightnow and India beating Zimbabwe is not that exciting as Zimbabwe beating India in their homeland.

Seems like u have nothing else to do except spending time on the net to look for these kinda stuff and CRITICISE.

Not true…

The other day I was coming from Lahore, and I bought the Lahore edition ‘The News’ and saw that they had a very small article devoted to Germanys world cup victory. Just like you, I was a bit dissapointed, since hockey has great appeal in Pakistan, they should have written a bigger article and should have posted more details.

However, the same day when I came to Islamabad, I got a chance to read the Islamabad edition of ‘The News’ and found that they had devoted half of the main sports page to the Germany world cup win. Now this does not necessarily imply that Lahores sports editorial has any hesitations… Its just space and time that matters, sometimes they have to keep it short and somtimes they have to report it the very next day due to space limitations.

Dawn is a good newspaper, you can judge by the fact that so many hindutvas seem to enjoy reading it on the net… Afterall, most of us dont use their newspaper sites as our only sources of information

Dawn is updated on a totality basis, which is why some people are arguing that their new edition comes out rather late. They retain their contents until the entire section for the next day is finalized, and is then published. I think they ought to update more often.

I personally think that ‘The News’ is alot better when it comes to Sports… They even supported India’s campaign against racism in cricket which proves that they are not biased in any way.

chilli...

Your thread about the quality of Pakistani news websites was moved to the Tech forum I believe, because it was more about website designing rather than news production. Dont jump the gun on every issue before you do a thorough search.

About Dawn not reporting India's win, it doesnt surprise me, and neither should it surprise you. For one, I believe the news is reported sooner or later. Secondly, I think even a kabbadi match in rural Punjab takes precedence over an indian test match, unless the match is against Pakistan, something India doesnt want anymore. So realistically speaking, you should expect Pakistani news from Pakistani media. International news are usually posted only from unbiased, or friendly sources. I think this is a practice adopted across the world.

Regarding the updating of the website, both Jang and Dawn are updated at midnight Eastern US time. That is wrong, and Ive written to both the papers numerous times about this, since it being a Pakistani paper, the least they can do, if not update it continously, is to update it at midnight Pakistan Standard time. I think its more a lack of resources than anything else, since their main source of income is the paper version. The internet version only brings in a meager amount via advertising, and even that is not certain.

Bottom line, all papers concentrate on local reporting. And when you have countries like India and Pakistan, you will naturally have some bias. Im sure this is evident from Indian papers as well.
