Could someone briefly tell me what it is ?
Who has it here ? What are the symptoms ? Are you excessivly tired and lazy because of it ? Do you have a special diet with it like what food to avoid ?
I’ve been diagnosed with this and I’m scared right now.
sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with it. But it isn’t something tooo bad. It’s a long term condition but very very treatable so that you can easily lead a normal life.
What basically has happened is that your body has produced antibodies against your thyroid leading to its inflammation or swelling. this swelling might lead to depressed thyroid gland function. Thyroid is present in the neck It produces a hormone which is responsible for our general metabolism in the body.
so if inflammation occurs or H thyroiditis, the thyroid hormone levels fall down and you might experience symptoms.
general symptoms:
weight gain because of slow metabolism of body
tiredness and lethargy
constipation
lack of concentration
am not sure if you require thyroid replacement therapy because I am not aware of the functional status of your gland. But what you would have to do is just have a diet less in saturated fats and carbs and avoid foods that could cause constipation such as plain flour, white bread. Eat more fibre. include fruits and vegetables.
three basic hypothyroidism diet rules to follow to make sure you keep your metabolism up. (1) never skip a meal, (2) eat protein with each meal, and (3) eat at least three meals a day.
proteins would increase your body’s metabolism and also provide you sustained fuel for energy throughout the day.
I was scared that it might be dangerous. I haven't gained much weight but I look swollen and chubby, esp my neck area. I can easily lose the track of a conversation in minutes, which alarmed me to get a consultation. If I run on the threadmill or come from a walk, I'm tired as if I'd run a marathon and would remain like that even if I get enough sleep.
In what food I can find proteins ? Is it boiled eggs, meat and fish ?
Someone told me I should avoid sprouts, is it true ?
Isn't thyroid somewhere linked with salt, I roughly read it somewhere but don't remember a thing.
yup eggs, meat, fish and pulses are good protein sources.
Oh and you might be feeling very sleepy all the time too and feel cold as well.
Thyroid isn't linked with salt.
Like I said you have to avoid food that cause gas and constipation. Since your metabolism is slow in this condition your bowels get slower too which leads to constipation.
Sprouts, kale, cabbage, cauliflower etc are all gas and constipation inducing stuff. They also interfere with thyroid function. So it is best to avoid them.
I have had it for a few years. Gained about 15lbs and have had a hard time losing. The symptoms wax and wane, at present am not too bad. Feeling tired and worn out, everything is in a haze. Yup. Its tough, but dont be hard on yourself. Get help from docs, medication, talk it out, research tthe disease so you know you are not lazy or crazy!
I've been living with this for about twenty years......not easy when fluctuations occur.
You likely need hormone replacement therapy.....has the doctor prescribed anything?
Everything that you are describing is commonly found in this condition. Don't be scared though.....it isn't as scary as it sounds/feels sometimes.
Hopefully the doctor has also done an ultrasound of your thyroid gland to make sure that there are no growths there.
wow, iv got this and am amazed at some of the information i have read in the above posts!! thank you ladies, please keep the advice coming, its very much appreciated
