Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents' Dinner

Wow this guy had super guts to say what he did. So he’s an Indian American Muslim, but why aren’t more desi Americans and specifically the Muslim Americans outspoken like this? It’s a comedy routine but actually quite serious what he was saying.

Muslim Americans don’t speak up. Why??

He spoke his mind and I wish more desis/minorities regardless of religion would speak up just like him.
What did you all think?

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

Ya I was surprised at his selection as he is not even the A category comedian or star yet. He does small clips at Comedy Central’s The Daily show. But I think the correspondents, which is the subtitle for media, picked him in their anger towards trump:

A- Hassan is Muslim
B- He is Immigrant
C- He is non-white.

Trump got votes by waging a rhetorical war against these three factors. Now to make the event more political, Trump decided to boycott it which was his counter-move against media.

I didnt see his entire performance but just a 2 min clip was an average one, could be better. Yes the confidence is huge and I’m sure he’ll get a big uplift from here.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

I think plenty of young brown americans in entertainment are speaking up loud and clear now compared to, say, the Bush era. Some of the notable ones worth following on Twitter

  1. Kal Penn - https://twitter.com/kalpenn - 2nd gen? indian parents, worked with Obama admin
  2. Kumail Nanjiani - https://twitter.com/kumailn - immigrant, moved to US at 18 from Pakistan
  3. Hari Kondabalu https://twitter.com/harikondabolu - 2nd gen from NYC, standup
  4. Aziz Ansari https://twitter.com/azizansari - This guy is the pick of the lot. Tamil, Southern, brilliant, not shy about busting on stereotypers
  5. Sopan Deb - https://twitter.com/SopanDeb - More white than most white people, but has his values on the right side
  6. Maulik Pancholy https://twitter.com/MaulikPancholy - similar track record as Kal Penn - more sitcoms, Obama admin role

I’d have added Mindy Kaling but she’s so far been pretty apolitical and busy basking in pop media success with a tiny layer of superficial feminism. Get over it and come join the real fights already, Mindy.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

I’m talking strictly about discrimination and bigotry against minorities and speaking up about this. So many Sikhs have gotten shot because some ignorant person was trying to show hatred against Muslims. Hasan is the only one that spoke up in front of the news media about how minorities are treated because of pure ignorance. I thought the second half of his routine about how it feels to be a minority, no desi americans have spoken about. We just try to blend in and integrate but never have I seen someone just be so outright honest like Hasan, he did awesomely!! I’m so proud of him.

Even if Kal Penn was a part of the Obama administration has he ever come in front of news media and spoken up and gotten this much attention? I never saw him after he left “House MD”, he never came in the limelight after that.

Sid, watch the whole thing please!!

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

all the people i pointed out are outspoken about these exact issues. getting attention in the media - what is your idea of the media? Hasan Minaj is by no means the only one, or even the one at the forefront of any of this. Asif Mandvi did a better job for years if you really want to compare apples to apples.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

I think the White House correspondents’ dinner is super huge. Every single political figure around the world watches it right?

Neither of you and no one else watched the video:grumpy:. What’s the use.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

I watched it for a while, Hassan Minaj isn’t particularly good as a comic. Nor is nerd prom a particularly important event in the grand scheme of news.

Also, you’ve not heard much of Kal Penn since HouseMD? :smack: He just raised half a million dollars for Syrian refugees in 24 hours after Trump’s muslim ban.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

:smack: Watch the whole thing, then comment. Not sure why it’s so hard to watch the whole darn thing it’s only 20 mins of your time. The end was what made the most impact and it wasn’t really meant to be funny. He was roasting everyone including the news media outlets for their conspiracy theory type of reporting/journalism all during the election year and in the first 100 days of Trump.

I’ll just let the thread go to its death now into thread heaven.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

fitoor pal, i’ve been watching hassan minaj on the daily show for months now overdoing his cringe doe-eyed stare. it is good that you like his headlining the nerd prom. if you think this is a big deal, you need to watch others more. i recommend starting with aziz ansari’s SNL monologue the week after Trump’s inaugural calling it like it is.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

Why is everyone banging their head? What happened to empathy for the fellow poster. Does this not once again prove desis lack empathy?

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

O man.. I just watched it and its super hilarious and one of the most exceptional speech. Thank you @fitoor for sharing and making me watch. Not only that the satire was right on money but also the timing of everything and above of all, the confidence. I mean its one thing to do a small clip on daily show but being the host of a mega event where entire world is focused on only you, this kid has done something wonderful.
The ending was perfect and he got well-deserved standing ovation for it.

Re: Hasan Minhaj at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner

What Empathy dude? We are people of the East. We only know homeopathy :snooty:
