i tried once, this kid was selling plastic toys in a market near my house in lahore. I tried giving him Rs50, he said I am selling these to buy books for himself,his sisters and younger brother and if you not buying anything i cant take money from you.
I asked that kid to take me to the book store and i will buy books for him and his siblings,but he refused again. So i bought couple of toys from him.

Yes, it happens often and I do so because I think it is a decent way of helping someone in need without hurting their emotions :)

YES...a LOT of times but ONLY in India. there are people who genuinely try to make a buck and still can't put the food on the table. i solute those unsung heroes...salaam ai Khuddar-e-jahaaN!!!

Errm for myself never.
But I remember getting off at the Airport in Islamabad and as I walked through the carpark and exited at the southern gates with thier over the top army bunker outside I passed some dishevelled beggars and since I was lucky to be alive I felt sorry for them at the time. So I stopped and went up to one of the younger lads who was struggling along with crutches and he waqs frightened of my army gear and thought I was some official about to move them on… but I stopped and took some money out of my wallet.
But the guy was too proud or perhaps too scared and did not want it so I felt a bit awkward then this stall across the road was selling sweetcorn and grilled meat and all sorts of delicous freshly prepared food. Seeing the hungry look in the guys eyes I came to a quick decision. So I ran across the road and bought as much food as I could carry and bought it all back to the half dozen or so beggars. They must have thought I was a right nutter. 
They were all one fammily and I felt so much pity for them… I was single at the time with no idea if I would ever see my fammily again and so I thought I would do my best to help out some fellow wanderers… ever since then I have never wasted money on myself but people keep telling me not to buy things for beggars becuase some of them are frauds.
Frankly fraudsters or not I still like to think I was right.

Only an hour ago this absolute sweetheart at a shop looked through the shelves to find me a catalogue; I realised 10 secs later that I didnt really need to have a look through it anymore but I stood there and looked through it after she'd gone through all that effort to find it.
