Can someone give a gist of what the book is all about ? I would really appreciate it.
Is the book available in the US (Amazon etc.) ?

i just got the book couple of days ago…but haven’t started it yet…no time

i wud luv to read the synopsis…
anyone??

chilli try indiaclub.com or desistore....these sites r way cheaper than amazon.com....

ps. but first check ur local public library...

I couldn't find the book anywhere but Barnes and noble....and i have started reading it so far it's pretty interesting ...

ok

ok finally i read the book…and i must say this is a very impressing “first” novel… Mohsin Hamid is a good “azaafa” among south asian angrezi writers…

The novel carries the theme of suffering the consequences…As somewhere in the book a character says, “People don’t believe in consequences any more”, but the book tells us no matter u believe or not u’ll have to suffer them at the end…u’ll have to be accountable for ur choices and ur deeds…
thats wot happened to the characters…

But the thing that fascinated me in the book was Character of Mumtaaz Kashmiri. A monster like woman…she smokes, enjoy drugs and extra marital sex wid out any guilt or any shame…a woman who is not “janam se maata”…:)…who feels nothing for her son…a woman who can put 1000 Rs. in her lovers’ wallet after spending some time wid him (*hahaha

)*… who admitts in her own assessment, “Maybe i am a monster afterall”…

Yea she is a monster…a bad bad woman…but somehow u can’t help falling in luv wid this character…

Mohsin Hamid u created a great character there, no less than Mufti’s Shehrzaad…

Mohsin Rocks:)

aur haaN Mohsin's style do remind us of Manto a lot....so if u r a manto fan....don't miss the book....

This is not MH’s first book .. I can not recall the first book he came out with .. my brain is kind of dull right now after 4 hour long meeting …. Moth Smoke is an excellent book … for any one of you who like HM try Hanief Kurashi (Pak-Brit) this is guy is really good … Black Album and Buddha of Suburbia are my favorites .. you can find most of his stuff on Amazon.com .. I am not sure about Moth Smoke but you can get that at desistore.com … the review on Chowk (actually there are two reviews with bunch of interactions posts)

Hey one more thing
These things are hard to explain
For some it seems strange... to swallow
The frontier of our minds
Is the last place we find
But maybe the first place we should go

Read it and it’s one of my favourite books. It eloquently portrays the elite life style in Pakistan.

It's one of the good books I ever read ...
I loved the way in which the chapters jumped from the "real life" scenes in the book to the courtroom battles, the way in which each character was given the opportunity to defend itself, and actually talk to the reader.
The characters were so real, I mean you could really feel for them, it was like becoming a part of them. Needless to say that I won't judge the whole society on this book alone obviously, but this book has unfolded a very important segment of our society. And it has presented it in a very raw and brutal way....in the sense that it has got straight to the point and not danced around the subject or tried to relate it through metaphors or smiles.
What also got me attracted to this book, was it's use of language and dialogue, the way in which he used everyday small examples to describe the inner most feelings and whilst reading, it really got me thinking deeply. The book really gets the reader to feel all different kinds of emotions, I could feel myself jumping from one emotion to another, hatred, sympathy, empathy, compassion, excitement. I loved the way he used AC as an example while trying to interpret what Mannuci thought hot/cold air meant to him.......Great Book ... Loved it. I contacted him and asked him if he is writing another book and he apprised me that this book took him 7 years to write, so the one he is writing presently will take a while as well ....

In the middle of reading it...can't put it down. MH is my first Pakistani author...could anyone reccomend any other Paki writers of a similar nature. Thanks
