I noticed a small lump on the inside of my cheek yesterday morning, and I am positive that it developed within 1 hour (I did not see it while flossing earlier). At first I thought it was just a piece of food stuck there, but it wouldn’t move. Then I looked in the mirror to see; I saw a round black mole (like a beauty spot) protruding out and I thought what the hell!!! So I went to my family doctor to have it examined, and she said that it it looks like a rare case of a cancerous melanoma which appears in the mucus membranes (normally it is supposed to appear on the surface of the skin). She said she could not identify it further, and referred me to an oncologist as well as a dermatologist, and recommended that I also consult an oral surgeon immediately (the minimum referral delay is 2 weeks atleast for oncologist and 3 for dermatologist). She said melanomas are the deadliest forms of skin cancer and can be cured if treated early, but ones inside the mouth are rare and have not been studied very well. I am worried that the 2-3 weeks may be too long.

I want to know if anyone here has been through this experience or knows anybody who has, because this is turning out to be quite depressing. I have an exam tomorrow morning but I don’t think I can write it because I am too stressed out and cannot concentrate. Any help or info would be appreciated!

Heiiii first of all no need of getting tensed.I would like to ask you to check it once again on your own if it is still there.I have particularly noticed one thing that certain foods or a tablet even causes this stuff,also high sugar presence in the body.I personally believe it is the result of blood gushing through that area.

It is still there, unchanged. I don't see how anything else may have caused this, though it may have. I am a daily smoker, so I am not that shocked, though I am a bit surprised because of my young age (early 20's). The doc said she has seen melanomas on the skin and mine looks 100% like one, but because it is inside the mouth she could not be absolutely accurate.

Its not a mucocele man, I've gotten those before many times when I've bitten my cheek or or lip by mistake. They are very painful and white/red in colour. This mole is black as coal, and not painful at all. When it is a mucocele, I notice the bite in advance (also pain before it develops). I am also 90% sure that it developed within 1 hour; for me mucocele has always took atleast 12-24 hours.

I think you need to wait for the docs checkup. Mean while u can search for other docs if they are available for checkup?

If it reall developed within an hour, it can't be a melanoma.

See an oral surgeon instead of waiting for oncologst or dermatologist. Onl a biopsy can settle what it is.

i really wanted to share these hadiths with you

It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Honey is a remedy for every physical illness and the Qur'an is a remedy for all mental illness, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Qur'an and honey."....(Sahih Al - Bukhari Hadith collection)

`A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "When a member of the Prophet's family got ill, the Prophet would blow over his body by reciting the two protective surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas, 113 and 114 respectively) and would rub him with his hand." (Muslim)

Also, it was reported that the Prophet approved some of his Companions who recited Surat Al-Fatihah as a ruqyah to cure a man stung by a scorpion.

We can use the Qur'an as a ruqyah by reading it and blowing on ourselves or on those who are afflicted: The Prophet used to read Surat Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas into his cupped hands, blow into his hands, and then wipe over his body. (Muslim)

Here are more supplications one can recite for seeking healing, as mentioned in the Sunnah:

1) Allahumma rabba an-nas, adh-hib il-ba'sa, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqaman. (O Allah, O Lord of mankind, remove the affliction and send down cure and healing, for no one can cure but You; so cure in such a way that no trace of illness is left.) (Muslim)

2) As'alu Allaha Al-Azhim, Rabba Al-Arshi Al-Azhim, an yashfiyak. (I beseech Allah, the Great, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you). (At-Tirmidhi)

3) Audhu biizzati Allahi wa qudratihi mimma ajidu wa uhadhir. (I seek refuge and protection in the august might and power of Allah from the pain and illness I am suffering from and I am afraid of). (Ibn Majah)

I consulted an oral surgeon. He excised a specimen from my mouth. Results should be back by tomorrow. Meanwhile, my symptoms have gotten worse: my sinuses are very badly congested, shortness of breath, swollen esophagus, chest pain, and a very strong metallic taste in my mouth which has altered my normal perception. My doctor has now conducted a thorough blood & urine test, and they've also taken x-rays of my head as well as ultrasound tests of my neck and lymph nodes. All of the results should be available by tomorrow.

Sorry to hear this.

Like Iconoclast said, biopsy will give better answer.

Something coming up in an hour? Not really cancer. And you are in early 20's, how much you had smoked so far to get smoking to be the reason? Some genetic reasons cannot be excluded however.

Like other people mentioned, its most likely not cancerous if it developed within an hour. The fact that you're a smoker points towards diagnosis of serious nature but again, its not gonna develop in an hour. Your current symptoms- chest pain, metallic taste etc could be due to stress from the diagnosis.

So, stay calm and strong- inshAllah whatever it is- they'll be able to take care of it. :)

Good Luck with the results...Waiting for the results is the most difficult thing I find but InshAllah everything will be fine.

It was an abnormal benign growth, according to the biopsy results. I had it surgically removed. Causes are still unknown, but most probably caused by a random genetic disorder. WoW.. how unlucky!

Glad to hear things worked out for the best.

Things like this just reiterate how important it is to enjoy each and every day as it comes, we don't know what tomorrow brings - or if we'll even be here to see it.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but has this episode shocked you enough to the point where you may have considered quitting smoking?

Yes ofcourse. I quit smoking, but I still smoke shisha occasionally.
