Harry Potter - Book Discussion *spoilers*

I believe ample time has passed since the book has been released and many of us have probably finished reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by now.

So, what’s the verdict on the book?

Personally, I was quite weary reading the book. The first two-hundred pages could have been done without. I remember reading that J.K. Rowling had major writer’s block with this book and it’s pretty obvious when you first start reading it that Rowling herself had no idea where to take this book. It was also full of grammatical errors and it jumped scenes quite a bit without any explanation. After a couple of hundred pages, I still had no idea where the book was going. I was indeed disappointed.

Then all of a sudden, it got interesting and it seems Rowling had a sudden epiphany and knew which direction to take the book. It was indeed full of surprises. I, of course like many others, found out who dies in this book before even reading it (in part thanks to certain Guppans ruining it and announcing who dies  ) but it was still quite shocking reading how he dies and who kills him. The identity of the Half-Blood Prince was also quite the surprise. I actually got teary eyed towards the end of the book. It was so shockingly sad, but I loved it.

I cannot wait for the seventh and final installment of these brilliant books to be released.

Has anybody seen the trailer for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire? I don’t like the girl who they have playing the role of Fleur. She seems quite plain and in the book, she’s apparently quite a beauty.

Anyway, what did you all think of the book?

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

can you kindly tell us:

  1. How did dumbledore(sp?) die?
  2. Who killed him?
  3. Who is Half-Blood Prince?

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

No I will not. :snooty: You must read the book and then we shall discuss it. :snooty:

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

You are very rude. :(

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

Best book in the series by a country mile.

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

I loved it, every minute of it!
I hated the 5th one. We could’ve done with more tan half of the book in that one. I was so mad and frustrated when i finally finished it. I ofcourse was more mad that she killed Sirius but oh well.

This book was really good! She didnt mess it up too badly like the last one. And you’re right, the identity of the half-blood prince was a complete shocker! But I didnt like the way she killed off Dumbledoor. My brother still thinks that Dumbledoor’s not dead but will come back in teh 7th book smack. She kinda winged the whole funeral thing too. The ending was sad, I wanted to cry too :frowning:

I just hope she doesnt come up with a sappy lil expalanation for Snape killing Dumbledoor. I hope she keeps him as an evil fella

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

i finished reading it the other day, I best liked the third book... I found this one a waste of time.

what happens ...chapters of nothing nothing and nothing...and then dumbledore telles harry some back ground and they go off to do something in a place which sounds suspiciously similar to where gollum found Bilbo baggins in the Hobbit do a bit O magic
and go home

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

I had to read book 3 and 4 just to get over the disappointment of this one. Complete waste of two days it took me to read it, it was just as long winded at the 5th book- which was equally disappointing and unnecessary.

I hated the whole "lets make Harry fall in love with Ginny" storyline, that was pathetic, but I suppose she is a children's author so she had to add that part in for all the teenage girls reading.

The Half-Blood Price storyline with the potions book was not as gripping as I expected it to be. Snape killing Dumbledore was excellent though. I think Dumbledore will come back in the 7th book like Gandalf the Grey came back in LOTR's, cos lets face it, J.K.Rowling is not the most original writer, she has stolen a fair few idea's from other books.

One thing I noticed in this book was Harry's temper, he's very emotional and quite volatile at times. Although, his nasty temper makes me love him more. How could anyone not love Harry? He's all alone now that Dumbledore has died. :(

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

Mehnaz : How old r u ?

:bravo:

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

My sis-in-law was saying the same thing...it's too long and winded. I, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoyed the book. I found the first few hundred pages to be a little slower than ususal, but I think that's because of all the information that Rowling had to lay out. All the details that are given will help us understand the events of the last book.

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

The Ginny storyline was so predictable though since the second book. You just know them two were going to end up together and Ron and Hermione would also end up together.

I liked it, although I don’t like the fact that Hogwarts school would be closed the next year.

I also think Dumbledore will do something from the grave, or his portrait in the Head Master’s office.

Hinna, I agree with you. The first couple of hundred pages were pointless. It got so good though after that. The inferi … … they sounded scary.

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

I could have done without all the “shipping” in this book. Really! who cares who kissed whom.

I guessed the identity if the HBP quite early on so that wasn’t a big surprise. But I was shocked by the ending. I knew Dumbledore was to die in this book (wink wink) but I wasn’t expecting Snape to do the killing.

I had a little crush on Snape … the redeemable bad guy character. All these sexy Fan Fics did nothing to reduce this crush :D. I am so upset about Snape being the bad guy that I haven’t read the book again. I hope that this was just a blind for the finale where Dumbledore will be back and Snape will be a good guy again.

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

Mehnaz, Hogwarts will never close, never ever. I think Harry will go back, he has to, he has to go back and steal stuff like the penisive and other crap that he will need to kill he-who-must-not-be-named. Hahahaha, I love saying that!

Aisha, how can you fancy Snape? His hair is as greasy as a freshies...ew, and when has Snape ever been a "good guy"? He is evil through and through, him and his greasy locks.

Why is there no smilie for the disgusted look?

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

err... I conveniently forget his greasy hair. He is this dashing spy with his sardonic smile... Moreover, he is the most intelligent man in the whole book with a great deal of self-assurance and confidence. The best part is he can get under Harry's skin anytime he wants. :D

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

Snape was mysterious and sexy, but the image of Alan Rickman playing the role of Snape in the movies just turned me off. Aisha, I also can't believe I pre-ordered this book. I might has well have waited. Oh well.

Missy, you are right about Potter having to return to Hogwarts. After all, that is where the sword of Gryffindor is, and I'm sure that will be one of the four horcruxes that Harry must destroy. How will that work though? I thought Voldemort had to have already done whatever he had to with the sword? He couldn't have though cause it's always been close to Dumbledore. Oh, but now he is dead. Hmmmm, let's see what happens!

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

Now you girls are just killing me!!! How the frig was greasy Snape "sexy and mysterious" ???????? In the books she described Lupin as being "sexy" not flipping Snape. Urghhh

I want to know who RAB is? My sister reckons its Siris Blacks brother, but I dont rememnber reading that he had a brother.

Where does she mention the sword, which book? Damn, I read too fast. Im not reading it again!

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

You know who I thought was really alluring once he became relatively normal? Sirius. :frowning:

She mentioned the sword in the last book. Remember, where they discussed the cup of Ravenclaw, the necklace of Slytherin, the sword of Gryffindor and something belonging to Hufflepuff. One of the horcruxes will be the cup of Hufflepuff and the sword of Gryffindor.

The first was the diary that opened the Chamber of Secrets. One is the necklace of Slytherin. I can’t remember what the rest are. :bummer:

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

Voldemort's snake Nigani?

The relationships added some much-needed humanity to the characters. They are mirrors of supposedly living, breathing (Western) teenagers and they ARE going to be horny - glossing over the hormones only makes the characters more cardboard thin.

(The current relationship count stands at, Ginny - 3, Harry - 2, Ron - 1, Hermione - 3? [Including/Excluding Ron] And I am willing to bet that it will stay stagnant there during book seven)

Sirius had a brother (Regulus Black). Mentioned in both book 5 and 6, and possibly before too. Killed at the hand of Voldemort, apparantly.

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

The next book will probably not be set at Hogwarts. I think in the end Harry and co. will go to Hogwarts to get Gordic's Sword....

I don't even know why there was so much discussion about Ron and Hermione. That was hinted strongly from book 3...

Re: Harry Potter - Book Discussion spoilers

Is this the last book? I haven't read any of them.
