Use this site for chemical ingredients knowledge; a good detailed site designed for chemicals used in foodstuff. Gelatin is the substance used as a stabilizer and thickener and it is usually extracted from pig.
I like these fruit gummies, which contain gelatin, now does that mean they are also haraam :( . I am still unsure where does gelatin come from. If it's from the bones of cows that were not slaughtered properly, then I think, I can live with that, and if the gelatin contents come from the bones of horses or pigs, then that's another issue altogether, but then how would you know which animal's bones were used to extract gelatin ?
^ Well, the general rule of thumb is that if it from animal sources, you avoid it. If it is from plant sources you can have it. The reason is, according to what someone explain to me, is that these slaughterhouses combine all the bones, or whatever, and send it for gelatin production.. so it includes all animals. I am not exactly sure of all the scientific or production notes for gelatin. Better safe than sorry.
Usually its pretty easy to figure out, if the gummy bear packet has a 1-800 customer care number. Just call them and find out. Since many people are vegetarians, so the customer-care folks usually know whether there is any animal source gelatin in the product.
We were told when we were kids by a non-muslim teacher who saw us eating gummies, he said these are haram for us coz it contains gelatine and he explained to us what it was. If some candies are chewy then chances are they contain gelatine.
But sometimes you get some candies from Indonesia or Malaysia where it says "halal gelatine."
Would be best to avoid sweets with gelatin as one of the ingredients. :o
I used to buy the huge bag of Gummy Bears by Haribo until I called up their company about 3 years ago and found out that their gelatin is not Kosher…What a bummer…
actually be careful with some "kosher" gelatin too. even some jews dont eat that. because according to some jewish traditions, human hair/ products are halal, while islamic traditions do not alow human parts to be consumed. so i heard that some orthodox jews dont eat every thing koshered by "reform" or even conservative jews...i use common sense and when there is a chance that the ultra orthodox jew wont eat something (kosher gelatin and all) i avoid it...walllha o alam.
