recommendations, places to buy from, any warnings, tips?
so far i’ve only owned 1 maxtor drive in my life, and it was pretty awesome.. i dunno WHY though i had three western digitalz in my life so far since 1995 and they were PRETTY awesome too..
system that this drive will be going into, will be on 24 hours, and this drive’s main purpose will be to dump big files and media related stuff onto it.. (system will remain on my western digital 40gig 7200 rpm drive with different partition for the apps and different for the system) .. so speed of this new drive wouldnt be a factor, it will be used for storing crap on it..
Faizy darling,
Considering you're already sold on WD, and that the prices are identical between brands, the only question should be whether you want to spend the extra $60 on the addition 40gb.
The rest you answered yourself.
back in my days of highschool when i was working in computer stores, i used to tell customers:
(taking THIS example) 160gb drive is 159.14, price PER gigabyte is $1.005 and 200gb is 221.27, price PER gigabyte is $1.10 something..
yar tofi, it happend like this, i have 80 gig drive rite now for the storage of crap, (and i’ve got a lot of crap) so anyway, this morning system reported 3 gigs left.. awrite not a problem, burnt half of stuff on cds, and now noticed in my downloads, that it will be filled by the weekend again.. plus comes the factor of drives being so cheap.. just few months back, (6 i think) 80gig was 160 bucks.. now in 160 u can get 160gb.. so i was thinking on that, and noticed lehhhh! 200gb are out and kinda in budget too..
hmmmmmm.. its a big project since i will be downgrading (OS wise) too..
The Maxtor: For high speeds/gaming etc. its a bit better but gets hot
The WD is a bit more silent, and is / stays a bit more cooler then the Maxtor, so if you want the system to stay 24/7 go for the WD. :)
one thing, check the warranty on the disks, cuz some HD have 1 year warranty others 3 and some 5 :)
goodluck
tofi: yara i am downgrading due to the 'feel' of things.. khair, thats just the way certain apps made me feel..
dutch: thanks yara, that helped a lot.. i will ensure warrenty is of 3 years.. (though westerns USUALLY come with 3 years)..
heating is kinda not a problem.. i have add-on fans for every drive i insert in my system.. i got extra-big heatsinks+fans for both cpus, two-fan power supply, and i've got fan in the tower just for circulating (ventilation), and pretty soon i'll be putting heatsink+fan on the controllers and videocard too..
its surprizing that i only spend 2-3 hours of personal usage on this machine..
(but coming from the background where it was 10+hours, so this habit of putting fans everywhere)
me shoo confoos I have 3 maxtor hard drives and I use em on everyday basis not all 3 of em at once , but randomly. However, can’t say anything about western though neva used it. As I find maxtor a reliable name.
