First of all, the mehar has to be something the guy can afford. If the amount is so much that he has to pay in installments, then either the amount was way too much to begin with, or the guy is not a good saver.
If its the former, then the families need to sit down and be willing to negotiate a realistic amount.
If its the latter, then I would say the soon-to-be-wife needs to think things over.
Side Point, but I find it offensive that anyone would think paying maher is like buying a girl. Its not. The money belongs to the girl, not her parents....so its not like you're buying a sex slave and paying the pimp. The money is also there for her own protection, that if there is a divorce or other, then she has something to fall back on.
Its not to be spent on the spot on a pair of prada shoes and a matching handbag. I feel sorry for the chics who do that, and then are left in a pudding when things don't work out in the end.
