I know alot of couples who recently got married are quite well stabled. They earned arround 6,000-7,000 US dollors every month, but they only set the haq meher close to 10,000 usd. And they none of them paid the money right away... some did it after 2 years and some are giving little bit of money each month because they cant pay in full.
I dont think any girl is that greedy who would refuse to have any intimacy with her husband without getting the money first. I am sure you are right about their right in islam but i dont think anyone will ever do it nor i heard anyone ever did....
