The dandiya dance is the "raas" - usually done in two parallel lines, with a 5 beat cycle, though 12 step raas are for the more energetic and creative sorts.
Garba is a circle dance - large circles of people moving around and doing all sorts of patterns. Add a little bit of Punjabi fusion bhangra stylin' to the normal garba routine, and you get a rockin' good time.
I went to see one in saint Louis saturday night with some Indian friends and it was fun!
Hey Ullu you’ve already got 23 posts for this thread… so thats another 67 to reach your target of 100! Good Luck
Forget dandiya shandiya....Bhangra is the best. Punjabis rule when it comes to culture and agriculture. Bhangra can kick ass of gujjus and marathis any day....
Chann
ps: just trying to help Ullo bhai reach his 100+ goal
I vote for Bhangra and Gidda anyday over Garba...punjabi music is soooo lively anybody can dance to its rythme.
Let's have Bhangra and Gidda at Durga Pooja all Bengalis will run away....they wouldn't know what hit them.
p.s. hey! i finally found way in which my post will have 100+ replies.
Hey Ullu,
If you weren't such an Ullu you would have worked this out a long time ago. Well done though. I think you might well reach a hundred with this one. Good luck.
Its hypocricy to leave an ALIVE child to go do punja before inannimate idol.

: HOME ALONE AND HUNGRY
:
:
: BY A STAFF REPORTER
:
: Calcutta, Oct.6:
: Mou Mondal, 10, spent three days of the Pujas locked inside the New
: Alipore flat she works in — without food or drinking water. She had
been
: left alone from Tuesday evening, Sashthi, after the lady of the house,
: Maitrayee Banerjee, and her two sons left for their Puja holidays to
: Bangalore.
: Mou was finally ‘rescued’ by the police on Friday morning after being
: alerted by anxious neighbours, who had heard faint cries of the girl
: from the house.
: “I survived the first two days on two packets of biscuits and water
from
: the tap. After the biscuits finished, I didn’t know what to do. I was
: hungry and scared… I thought I would die,” recounted Mou, tears
: streaming down her cheeks.
: “By Thursday night, I was too weak to move or shout for help, but I
: still tried to draw the neighbours’ attention. The last thing I
remember
: is lying down on the floor and crying…”
: After being alerted by the neighbours, the New Alipore police broke
into
: the flat early on Friday.
: “The girl was almost unconscious when we rescued her,” an officer of
the
: local police station said.
: Mou was produced before the sub-divisional magistrate’s court at
Alipur
: on Friday afternoon and then handed over to her maternal uncle.
: A case has been registered against Maitrayee Banerjee under Section
342
: of the IPC for illegally detaining a minor girl. Officials said action
: will be initiated against her as soon as she returns from Bangalore.
: Officer-in-charge of New Alipore police station, Subrata Ghosh, said:
: “We rescued the girl around 3 am. But we could not take her to the
: police station as we have no separate rooms for women. So, we
requested
: some relatives of the Banerjees, who live in the same apartment, to
: shelter the girl for some time. But they refused.”
: The police then contacted several groups of social workers.
: “Untimately, two women from the locality, who are engaged in social
: work, agreed to take care of the girl till it was time to take her to
: court,” Ghosh added.
: Preliminary investigations revealed that five years ago, Mou’s father,
: Amal Mondal, married a second time and abandoned the girl and her
: mother, who also left soon after.
: Mou then went to live with her maternal uncle in a Salt Lake shanty.
: According to the police, Banerjee picked up Mou from there and
employed
: her as a maid a few months back.

well, I will save mine in case I have to use it against Bush-Chenney.
Have you ever heard of Malwai Gidha?
Chann not a Malwai but loves Malwai Gidha
Hmm, I think leaving anyone alone while doing punja would be a scary thing.
If I were to choose between bhangra and garba, bhangra wins by a long shot.
Got Punjab?

astro yar, the bhangra that you and I know and the one that Daler Mehndi does is very easy. the real bhangra needs lot of stamina and muscles.
by looking at Daler Mehndi's gogaR(dhiDh, tonD) I can tell you that he cann't do real bhangra for more than 30 seconds.
Real bhangra takes unreal stamina. People should be flying about, arms pumping, and bodies flipping all over the place. Well, at least in my bhangra-mania.
It's not just a dance, it's an attitude.
azad munna, keep up the effort. unless some such discussion comes up, century seems unlikely for this thread.
Oh there’s hope yet Ullu!

Whats the difference between your Puja and Rani’s Punja?
maybe in punjab, they do punja. durga is godess of power, anyway.
Ullu,
I'm quite lazy so I can only pray to one god for power, love, money and other stuff!
So you(hindus)have to go to one god for love one for money ect. ect. HOW DO YOU DO IT? is it not easier to pray to one god for everything?insted of going and praying to each and everyone! what about the Lazy people?
Desert fox
Its said that Hindu's have some 10,000 gods is that true? Can they name them all if this is true?

i think lazy people should not pray at all. (they should rather spend their valuable time in brushing teeth, taking bath at least once a week and like)
i agree that having one god is a good idea. it is like 'one window system' u apply to one person rather than going to all concerned officers. but u know, in india like most of third world, if u give application to one person and wait for the prayer to be answered, it will never work out. so perhaps, hindus decided to approach different gods responsible for different things, individually.
i am sure u are impressed by my knowledge of hinduism and religions in general.

Lazy people have it easy in Hinduism, I think. Just be a sadhu - no need for extravagant clothes, no need to cook lavish meals, no need to work for your money. You just have to sit and be quiet/meditate. What more would a lazy person want?
10,000 Gods, Malik? I wager there are 6 billion, at least. One for each of us. Throw in a couple more to cover natural manifestations, and who knows, we could be looking at a couple trillion.
Thanks for the figures Astrofan. Does any Hindu dispute Astrofan's claims of 6 billion Hindu gods?
