Well, it's not about gifts or popularity. It's about the norm/expectations. Just like celebrating birthdays is kind of a big deal in my workplace (being a small, close-knit firm), when he didn't even acknowledge my birthday, it made me realize that wow he still hasn't let go of something that happened almost three years ago.
As for friends ... it's the thought that counts. Gift na bhi laayen, but the time spent together is priceless. It's not like we get to see each other very often. Everyone is so busy in their own lives.

Celebarte to kahir main bhi nahin karta. My sisters just make it special. acha sa khana banana, wish karna… yaad se gifts lana and thats all.

Agree gifts don’t matter. Sometimes, people remembering your birthday makes is special. Like here many people remembered exact date (or month). jiia was asking me date and I told ke guzar gai 12 ko :sid: Asif remembered it and he couriered card and gift yesterday. That is priceless.
