Pretty much and they needed to. He is the main thing in the entire plot, a poor actor and noone would have liked the show. Trust me read the books too, you will love them more than the TV show!
The First 2 Seasons Of The Show So Far Have Been Original stories, Not Based On Events IN The Books, but rather alluded to in the back story of some of them I believe. The creator of the show has definitely taken liberties with the characters and story, but has improved on it vastly compared to the movies. Even though Hopkins won an Academy for his portrayal in sotl, Mads Mikkelsen is killing it (no pun ontended) with his performance. The first book ,red dragon's story, will I think come either in season 4 or 5. And pretty much then the show will stop because you have the books/movies which already continue the tale from red dragon, sotl, and hannibal.
If you are a fan of the books/movies make sure you see Michael (Heat/Colateral) Mann's movie Man Hunter based on red dragon. It is way underrated.
