I keep one in my hand bag . I keep one at my work desk. If I don’t get a chance to wash my hands before having tea or before eating anything at work I just use the hand sanitiser. when my baby was born and needed EXTRA EXTRA care & hygiene I used to never touch her without sanitising my hands.
I am much surprised to read about it's dangers. Here I have seen that doctors use hand sanitiser before examining infants which also involves checking their sucking power.
Wow, docs are supposed to wear gloves if they're going to go near any orifice with their hands!! I'd point that out to your doc if he/she wants to go sticking an alcohol-laced finger into babys mouth!!
I'm not a big fan of them to be honest. I think it's just overkill. Proper hand washing technique kills/get rid of the germs just as well, if not better, than hand sanitizers. Plus if I have hand sanitizer, any kind, whether it be the kind you get commercially or the kind physicians and nurses use in hospitals, I would never ever take that hand near my mouth. It's just nasty =/
I'm sure she wore gloves too...the proper technique is to sanitize hands and then put on gloves. But even before that I'm sure they washed their hands. Sanitizers are used only when there isn't much time to properly wash hands because it can take up to 4 minutes if done right.
...no one has yet mentioned the haram-ness of these hand sanitizers due to their high alcohol content.. Even though the product is used on your hands, its absorbed into your system thru the skin so doesnt this make it just as haram as, say, vanilla flavoring?
I have sanitizer in my bag but use it very very very rarely. Most of the time, I will go to a bathroom and properly wash my hands. I am a little bit of a germophobe. I will scrub my hands, get under my nails even if there's nothing there and then hold my hands under mild hot water for at least 15 - 20 seconds.
I always keep a bottle in my purse and my car, because you cant always wash your hands when you want to

Regarding alcohol, some scholars are of the opinion that it is najas and so shouldnt be used topically. Others' opinion is that it isnt najas and so can be used topically [such as in creams, perfumes etc]. It is not eaten and injested...no one eats their hand sanitizer....at least I hope not!!
I have one in my purse and now one in my daughter's diaper bag...but I personally dont like using it and prefer to wash my hands whenever and however possible...if not, then yes I use the sanitizer as the last option...
I know it sounds silly but to me it feels as if I am smudging the germs all over....I just have this weird not-so-pleasant feeling while rubbing it on my hands...
I have one in my bag all the time. Either the hand sanitizer or wipes both are necessary for me.Since my family goes to hiking a lot and you cannot find water everywhere I think its a must.
For MO3 thanks for article
^ babies who are born pre mature needs super protective environment esp in early days of their life. They need such an environment because they have a weak immune system . Their weak immune system is not a result of a super protective environment rather it's a result of their pre mature arrival in the world.
^ I only made a general statement, looking at relative immune systems of children brought up by wealthy parents in Hong Kong versus those growing up in villages of mainland China.
^^ it's actually very true. there is a theory that allergies are more common now because the immune system of children are hyperactive because when tehre were communicable diseases, the immune systems fought them off instead of their own bodies. there is also a higher rate of superinfections and other problems because of the overly sanitized environments. not that it's ok to let your child sit in filth from the ages of 0-12, but a little dirt now and then isn't going to kill him/her
I agree. I like to let my children play outside, get their hands dirty a bit, pick out frogs (yes they do ) and roll on the lawn (). They need to be tough and not choo choo ka murabbas (wonder how that term came about). However, carrying a hand sanitizer helps when traveling especially in planes where you have to wait long before you can get into a stinky lavatory just to wash your hands before you eat the sandwich you made at home because they don’t serve you anything anymore (). and also when you’re teaching and this kid wipes his runny nose then flips his page right after and you have to touch that page too. It just gives you the mental peace of being protected…for the time being
