In most cases, its relatively easy. Hand knotted carpets usually have no lining and the fringe on the edge is a continuation of the carpet itself. In machine made carpets, there usually is a lining at the bottom, and the fringe is stitched as a separate accessory.

you guys need to watch "how is it made" once in a while. I think if you put hand woven and machine woven side by side, you would be able to tell.
