LAHORE: Hamza Shahbaz is the front runner for the Chief Minister’s office as the majority within the PML-N wanted him to replace his father.
After the Sharif brothers’ disqualification and the consequent fall of the Shahbaz Sharif government in the Punjab, the PML-N top notchers are considering various names for the office of the chief minister (CM) Punjab.
It was learnt that the PML-N was considering the names of Sardar Zulifqar Khosa and Hamza Shahbaz Sharif for the office. Insiders said that earlier Khosa was the front runner for the CM’s office but now the majority was backing Hamza Shahbaz, the political heir of the Sharif family.
In recent meetings held in Raiwind, the majority within the PML-N was found to be supporting Hamza’s name for the CM’s office. Insiders stated there were some parliamentarians from Lahore who had offered the party leadership their readiness to vacate their seats for Hamza. The sources stated that a majority within had almost reached a consensus over Hamza as they believed that Sharif could better control the Punjab through Hamza, rather than anyone else.
Hamza won the National Assembly election unopposed from NA-119, Lahore. Insiders said that the PML-N was considering having an interim CM for the makeshift arrangement. Insiders stated the party was considering the names of Dost Muhammad Khosa, Rana Sana Ullah Khan, and Rana Mashud for the CM’s office till the time Hamza was elected a member of the Punjab Assembly. Insiders stated that if Dost was again made the CM of the Punjab for the second time as a makeshift arrangement, he would be disqualified from holding this office for the third time. They are claiming that the tie was between Rana Sana and Rana Mashud for the makeshift CM.
