Three Palestinians Killed in Hamas-Police Firefight (Update1)

Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) – Three Palestinians were killed in a firefight between police and Hamas members late yesterday, and protesters later fired shots at a meeting of lawmakers, as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas seeks to clamp down on the open display of weapons by militants.
The Gaza Strip clash, which included the firing of shoulder-launched missiles at a police station, also left more than 50 people wounded, including bystanders, witnesses and hospital officials said. The dead included a Palestinian police major, a woman and 22-year-old man, they said.
The fighting comes a week after the killing of about 20 people when a vehicle containing explosives accidentally exploded at a Gaza rally called by Hamas, which the U.S. calls a terrorist organization. Abbas, who is seeking to impose order after Israel evacuated its Gaza settlements last month, has asked Hamas and others not to carry weapons in public. He has refused to disarm them as Israel has demanded.
A session of the Palestinian Legislative Council was suspended today after militants and policemen broke into the courtyard of the legislative building in Gaza, witnesses said. Demonstrating police officers opened fire in the air and called on the council to take measures against Hamas militants, they said.
Dispute
The clash started when police intervened in a dispute between two people at a cash machine, Tawfik Abu Khousa, spokesman for the Palestinian Interior Ministry, said on Palestinian Radio. A Hamas member he identified as Mohamed Ranteesi, son of Abdel Aziz Ranteesi, who was assassinated by Israel in Gaza in 2004, called other Hamas activists by phone to come to the scene, the spokesman said.
Security officials said yesterday’s firefight at the Beach refugee camp west of Gaza City began when police stopped a car containing Hamas militants and asked for identification, which the occupants refused to produce. A Hamas official, who asked not to be identified, said the car’s occupants were unarmed and that police fired at it when it refused to stop.
Israel, meanwhile, said it was opening an investigation into the death of a 13-year-old Palestinian in the West Bank, the Israel Defense Forces said in an e-mailed statement late yesterday.
Major General Yair Neve, the head of the IDF’s central command, suspended the commander of the force that entered the Askar refugee camp Sept. 30 and shot what troops said they believed was an armed individual amid a group of people throwing stones and bottles.
