my moulwi saab’s name was naik muhammed. he used to bring a beating stick with him when he came to teach me qura’an at the exact same time, when rugrats would be on. 
he used to wear a long white thoub. he always had a miswaak in his mouth. his fingers were hairy, and one time he hit me because i couldnt pronounce ‘qal qala’. 
i told my abbu, who told him not to hit me anymore. the day i finished the qura’an, he didnt bring his beating stick, and brought me a collection of books on the lives of the prophets.
