My fellow guppies assalam alaikum wa rahmatAllahi wabarakatu
A recent post on the topic of “koonday” (something completely new to me but khair), the topic mentioned the making of the desert Halva and saying a prayer over it. This really got me all intrigued and brought back a great deal of childhood memories.
Im from the UK, born and raised here, and whilst growng up as a child I used to attend Qur’an recital classes at the local masjid (alas that was all that they ever were), and one such establishment in particular used to conduct practices not too dissimilar to “Koonday”, along with various other types of “Khatams” and “dua-khwanis”.
At the time, I used to go along with it all, raise my hands at the appropriate times, go with the flow basically. However, even back then I used to feel a little left-out. “Look at all these educated people who have knowledge about all these practices, know all these rituals - If I dont learn any of them then I will be at a loss - grow up as an adult with not even the basics that I would need to practice Islam” I used to think to myself.
I mean, take Koonday for example - something new to me but a good example - surely there must be something somewhere on how the halva making process should be, what sort of cooking-vessel to use, the recipe, the time of the Koonday itself, how much to eat, what to say in the dua itself, and so on.
At the time, although I felt uneasy I thought I’d better simply do what they are doing and all will be well.
As I grew older I came across the literature, the Qur’an that I’d always recited in arabic, had its meaning translated, the authentic sayings of the Nabi (s) were made apparent. It all became easy, Salat was described in detail, fasting, Hajj, Zakat, the do’s and do nots were all clear for me to see. Even the authentic supplications of the Nabi (s) and advice on what to ask and in which situation was all apparent.
One thing that has eluded me to this day, is something similar - detailed instructions on things such as Koondays - so I have abandoned them alltogether (kundays, fathia on thursdays, etc).
Does anyone know of any prohpetic instructions on such khatams, or anything from Allah?
