Halloween

This question has been asked many times before but let us, one more time, review our thoughts and share our beliefs…

We all know that Halloween (and many other festivals) started out with religious foundations. Today, however, they have been reduced to simple fun and money spending events. Take Halloween for example. Do you really think that the American family next door to you is worshipping on Halloween or performing religious rituals that evening? No. I think it’s all about getting your kids a costume and have them go door to door and collect candy.

Now of course we can argue that why spend money on costumes [well many desis don’t as they much rather have the kids wear their traditional kurta shalwars and lehengas and go as foreign princes/princesses year after year], or why collect candy that can potentially drive your kids nuts.

BUTTTTT, would you prevent your chidlren from participating in Halloween activities just because it is supposed to have religious origins?

Re: Halloween

its great you started this topic cuz i am going through something that is making me question others thinking too

so i am throwing a halloween party for kids in our social circle… one aunty who is on the right path of islam questioned my judgement and said i am doing somethign haram… and told my mil to stop me… now my mil doesnt butt in on my plans ever so i never got to hear of it from her but my hsuband was told that its wrong what we are doing… infact we should call it something else, still have the party and its ok if kids dress up…

that left the husband confused cuz … erm… what does that leave out?

my answer was … hey.. its nothing religious… its not like xmas… or easter… we arent worshipping anything.. .its just a fun day for kids to dress up and have candy.

in denmark we have another festival where kids dress up and then stuff candy in a pinata (sp) and then resume to beating it to get their goods… thats their halloween if you can call it that and its in feburary.. though with american influence.. .danes have started to celebrate it too… but its so so clear taht there is no religious influence at all…

yet that aunty wouldnt let go… in the end i said if you dont want, dont send your granddaughters.. but im still having it…

i dont know.. to me i dont see any harm in it.. hell we would ahve halloween in a place liek arabia.. khullam khulla! seriously

Re: Halloween

I think its harmless.... my daughter loves dressing up on Halloween and I love taking her pictures :)
Good thing is that my princess doesn't even like candy that much, she only likes certain milk chocolates so we just sort it all quickly after coming home and I give it away to other kids who come late at night for trick or treating :p

Re: Halloween

Muslims who celebrate Halloween for three years in a row, will become a toad or a spider .

Re: Halloween

I wouldn't have any issues with my kids participating. My parents never stopped us.

I don't think that I would go out of the way myself to celebrate -- meaning I probably wouldn't throw a Halloween party, but I don't have issues with folks who do. I also don't want my kids super-invested in it and spending lots of money on costumes and things. But I do love to dress up (any excuse to wear my blue sparkly rockstar wig).

Re: Halloween

Yeah I fully agree with you. When I was a kid, I celebrated halloween till a certain age then I eventually grew out of it. Neither my parents made extra special efforts into dressing me up, throwing parties nor they forced me to stop with the tradition. The same patern could be seen with kids of my family today. I don't think exchanging folks with full opposition to this practice with folks who are super invested in it, is really a good idea.

Re: Halloween

i think there is no problem in halloween dress if he know about it.he know actually he have to celerbrate eid.let him go.dont make issue its just fun for him.jolie is right.i never stop my son

Re: Halloween

The masjid i go has an Alternative Hallowe'en Program (I like to call it HALALowe'en :) ), in which kids come in the evening time (not dressed up of course) and they have games and snacks and pizza for the kids there. Each kid goes home with a bag of candy as a thank you.

I went trick-o-treating when I was young, and I honestly wouldn't mind if my kids went...but I think the hubby would say differently. LOL.

Lols I like Halaloween.

At the Jewish school I taught at, we weren't allowed to celebrate or acknowledge Halloween because the holiday has a history of antisemitic sentiment, and many people did not approve. But most of the kids went out and trickortreated and such. The best was when a student started arguing with me about assigning homework, claiming that Halloween is a national holiday...and he wasn't even American.! Ah, you gotta appreciate the effort tho. :D ahhhh I miss teaching :p

Re: Halloween

I am not into halloween, I don’t take 'em out for bhatta collections :chai:

Re: Halloween

I dont get whats so wrong in letting a kid dress up? They'll probably grow out of it at a certain age, and it isnt a religous thing, why not let your kids enjoy it?

Re: Halloween

Nothing wrong , Just don't do it for three years in a row.
