Halal makeup range launched in the UK

Animal and alcohol-free make-up launched in the UK to meet demand for halal cosmetics

Halal meat for Muslims has been readily available in the UK for years, but now a business woman has gone a step further by launching a range of halal make-up.

The cosmetics - which includes everything from lipstick to eyeliner and blusher - are made in strict accordance with Islamic law, using plant extracts and minerals instead of alcohol and animal products. Samina Akhter says she set up Samina Pure Make-up because she felt uneasy praying while wearing non-halal make-up.

‘I don’t feel comfortable praying with make-up on not knowing what was in there. When I researched what was in make-up I found there was a lot of animal products included. I was shocked to find that some products contained alcohol and even pig placenta. Many Muslim women like me have been frustrated by wanting to look good and follow their faith.’

‘We’ve had women say, “Thank you, now I can use products and pray without having to take the make-up off”.’

Samina, who runs the business from her home in Birmingham, started importing the make-up from Australia six months ago. She now has more than 500 customers as well as interest from America and Indonesia. The cosmetics are shipped in from Australia and certified by the independent Halal Certification Authority Australia.

Prices range from lipsticks for £8 to full make-up packs for £65.

Samina Pure Make-up is the first company in the UK to sell halal certified make-up. Halal means anything which is lawful in Islamic law and prohibits the consumption of pork, blood and alcohol. Products which do not conform are known as ‘haram’.

Samina said: ‘I’m not saying “Such and such product is haram and we are halal - you have to use us. Women have their own choices but at least they’ve got the option to do that."’

But some Muslim leaders have expressed concern that the word ‘halal’ is being used as a marketing gimmick. Sheikh Haitham Al-Haddad, a leading Imam in the UK, said: ‘Sometimes people misuse or abuse this word and put halal on any product. I’ve seen the word halal stamped on fish and this is ridiculous. If the product contains dead flesh or meat, any pig or haram [forbidden] animals like dogs, or any alcohol, then generally it is impermissible. If the product contains a very small amount of animal or alcohol, then some scholars say it is permissible. Also, if the disallowed ingredient changes into another substance, through the chemical process, then some scholars say this is allowed.’

Re: Halal makeup range launched in the UK

This is hilarious. It's not like we're eating lipstick by the tube or munching on eyeshadows. I also would like to point out the irony of this woman who is taking something as simple as makeup containing a minute amount of alcohol in it and creating a 'halal' cosmetics company, yet completely overlooking the fact that many conservative Muslims such as herself are against women wearing makeup or showing off their beauty in any way.

^They'll prob say it's not haram if they're just wearing it indoors for their husbands.. or makeup outdoors is ok long as it's not blatant eg. bit of concealer or foundation and nude or subtle lips.. I do see a lot of niqaabis who don't do the natural look tho and play up their eyes as much as possible with coloured lenses, lashings of mascara and smokey eyeshadow..

I always thought alcohol was ok long as it wasn't being used as an intoxicant tho I guess some ppl do believe it's haram full stop and not ok as a facial toner or whatever..

finally an animal free makeup. I was sick and tired of using that kutta lipstick ...

TLK :omg:

But really I think she is catering to the needs of a lot of muslim women who are concerned about what they wear on their skin. There are many brands that do contain all plant based ingredients but not ALL products on the range may be that way. So here, she has identified a problem and found a solution…so what’s wrong in that. I think we should acknowledge a woman entrepreneur and support her.

I didn't even know they used pig placenta in some makeup. Yuck!

i bet not as sick and tired as the dogs.
