Halal Grocery stores

Not sure how it is in other states or western countries like Canada and even other parts of the US but here in NY, I’ve noticed a few things.

Grocery stores, from teh smaller neighborhood ones to the big supermarkets like stop n shop, have pretty big and organized meat departments. packaged chicken/beef/pork/seafood products. Plus since there are so many chains, small and large, and they all more or less are online or at the very least deliver circulars to ppls homes, customers can shop around for the best deals and prices…

Then there’s the neighborhood butcher shops where they have various meat plans to suit every family’s needs…Some even offer some free items (like a carton of eggs or drinks, etc) if you buy a certain amount. Also, i’m just assuming here, but they also cut meat to your liking like in the desi butcher shops, and sell items separately for thsoe who dont want a plan.

how come our desi stores don’t do this? Do they think that there’s no need to b/c there’s no demand? Do customers think that its useless to demand b/c its not like they have as many options for getting good quality halal meat for hte best price/service as others might?

i suggested this to someone and htey said that its nto done b/c desis will NEVER follow a plan and the store will go bankrupt if htey start doing that. Am i just going to the wrong places?

How is it in your area, either US/canada/even in middle east or aus/NZ?

Re: Halal Grocery stores

What do you mean by plan?

Re: Halal Grocery stores

they usually have them posted onto their windows.

For example:
xx whole chickens
xx lbs boneless chicken breast
xx lbs ground beef
xx lbs goat meat
for $yy
+ free dozen eggs

There'll be about a dozen plans, ranging from most to least items, with different prices. I'm sure htey also sell just single stuff, but the idea is that if u were to buy each combination of meat, you'd get it at a discount as opposed to just buying it single. I've never shopped there myself, so I'm not sure what else there is..but that's pretty much what a plan is......

Re: Halal Grocery stores

I've never seen any plans like such in any stores in our area or even back in michigan. I am talking about non-desi stores

Re: Halal Grocery stores

Really? hmm.....

Re: Halal Grocery stores

Our desi grocery store in tampa sells in packages and open as well. They most have 2 lb tray packs of meat that is quite commonly used or even things like payee...

oh they don't give out any free food...and like TLk I have never seen any such plans in tampa or here....

Re: Halal Grocery stores

Ive never seen plans like this either, but as for circulars, some of the desi stores here do make them, with the specials of every week. I dont know how they all distribute them, but the one I go to, they always hand them out at the mosque after Jumaah. Free food deals Ive only seen at IGA, they always give you something free when you spend $60, something different every week

Re: Halal Grocery stores

Sara, have you try any arabic halal meat stores. There is 1 halal meat store near me owned by Egyptians and they provide several types of meat/cuts etc. But no discount or anything.

Re: Halal Grocery stores

by the desi ppl giving free food with grocery can also mean the free food is old...so watch out...

Re: Halal Grocery stores

^ so true.

Re: Halal Grocery stores

anyone heard of panjabi word Choongaa .. I think that is what Sara is talking about
